Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

You will excuse me if I am a little distracted this week by goings-on in Japan and Korea… and for once our US readers might appreciate the importance of the competition! So, if your national side is still involved, good luck in the quarter finals (even if you're Brazilian!).

However, I couldn't let the opportunity pass to update a couple of stories from previous Editorials.

The first comes with the news of the successful Australian demonstration of teleportation. I must admit that earlier this year when I mentioned that breakthroughs may be imminent I thought my tongue was firmly lodged in my cheek. And while teleporting a laser beam over a one-metre distance is hardly the stuff of Star Trek, it certainly demonstrates that quantum physics has a lot to offer... even if it can't yet be explained.

The second update appears in this week's top ten products with the news that Sumitomo reckons it can manufacture gallium nitride wafers that will yield reasonable quantities of violet lasers for the next generation of optical disc drives. Hardly teleportation, I know, but certainly a major breakthrough in optical storage.

Now… if only we could find a foolproof way of determining offside decisions. (Surely an ideal application for Bluetooth?)

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We now have more than 7000 engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company.

In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

2. Low-dislocation substrate yields more blue lasers

Sumitomo has developed a novel single-crystal gallium nitride (GaN) substrate that may be used in violet lasers for high-capacity next-generation optical video recording technology. SEI has started shipping samples and is presently working to mass produce the substrates. The new substrate has low dislocation (crystal defect) areas arranged in an orderly manner. Each low dislocation area of new substrate is about 500 microns in diameter.

3. ASIC cuts Bluetooth interfaces down to size

Brain Boxes has developed a new CompactFlash interface ASIC that will shrink the active parts count of Bluetooth CF and PCMCIA cards to two chips. The new ASIC will also form the core of Brain Boxes and CSR's CompactFlash reference design, enabling glueless interface (no extra components needed) to both CompactFlash/16bit PCMCIA bus and CSR's BlueCore Bluetooth chips.

4. Digital amplifiers sound "as good as analogue"

Texas Instruments has introduced a new line of cost-effective digital audio amplification products, enabling new opportunities for all-digital audio systems. Among the new products is the industry's first 100W all-digital audio amplifier, which enables a manufacturer to shrink the height of an A/V receiver to one quarter of the typical size. TI's latest product lines will increase digital amplifier power output, number of channels available and sound quality, while reducing power consumption, system cost and form factor size in targeted audio devices, ranging from DVD and A/V receivers to mini-component systems.

5. Shape-memory alloy forms tiny actuator

Addressing the large applications gap between macroscopic motors and microelectromechanical systems, Nanomuscle actuators from Steadlands International use the properties of shape-memory alloys to create tiny actuators that can be produced at a fraction of the size and cost of traditional electric motors. In contrast to the coils, magnets and gears used in a motor-powered actuator, the Nanomuscle has a single working part - a long, hair-thin wire of nickel-titanium alloy. When a current passes through the wire, the resistive heating of the current causes the wire to contract, providing the basic actuation function.

7. Iris recognition system moves beyond gate control

Oki Electric has unveiled a new version of its iris recognition system, the Irispass-WG, which automatically detects the position of the eyes, scans the iris, the pupil of the eye, and then identifies individuals by capturing the tint patterns on the iris. The company will begin marketing and shipping the system next month in Japan. Oki offers various security systems based on iris recognition technology, including the Irispass-S gate management system, which functions as a key at the entrance, and the Irispass-h, a compact authentication unit connectable to a PC.

9. Prototyper gains power integrity analysis tool

Zuken has added a new power integrity analysis module, Hot-Stage PI, to its Hot-Stage virtual prototyping design tool. The module enables detailed analysis of power supply system structures with respect to key electrical parameters including impedance, switching noise and electromagnetic radiation. Power planes can become resonant in high-speed digital designs, rendering decoupling capacitors ineffective and increasing radiated interference. Hot-Stage PI enables the electrical verification of the supply structures, providing fast, full board analysis of results with short feedback loops to verify the impact of design changes.
