Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

It's exhibition season again on both sides of the Atlantic, with the monster Design Automation Conference in New Orleans and the ever-growing Bluetooth World Congress in Amsterdam.

And for the benefit of those of us who can't raise either the budget or the enthusiasm to travel, both organisers have created websites, but seemingly with different agendas.

Top marks go to DAC (www.dac.com). Although some of the typography may be a little hard to read (even at 1024 x 768 on a 17in monitor), this site really does offer a real alternative to going to the show. There is a wealth of information, both in terms of products and technology.

Best of all is the conference section, where almost all papers are available as text, PowerPoint files and as video. (But don't even contemplate the video if you don't have a broadband connection.)

"Bluetooth wireless technology is coming of age" is the proud boast on the website for the Amsterdam show (www.ibctelecoms.com/bluetoothcongress). But, unfortunately even now, the day before the show begins, the main focus of the site appears to be in selling the show, both to exhibitors and to delegates.

On the plus side the typography is clear and beautifully presented. But there is no doubt that the organisers are trying to get you to register for the exhibition… or to pay up to attend the conference.

I can only hope that more information will be freely available after the show, as despite its brave boasts, Bluetooth certainly has not come of age yet, and needs as much publicity as possible.

If I can be mischievous for a moment, one interesting sidebar to the Bluetooth website can be found in the analysis of the attendance at last year's event (held in the millionaires' playground of Monaco). Most exhibitions would be keen to show that technical staff were in abundance. However, 35% of those attending the 2001 Bluetooth World Congress fell into the "CEO/Director/VP/President" category.

Perhaps moving the show to Amsterdam will redress the balance.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have almost 7000 engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company.

In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Fingerprint board isn't fooled by phoney fingers

Parvus Corp is developing modular fingerprint identification hardware for embedded computer applications in co-operation with Fujitsu Microelectronics America (FMA). Intended for biometrics-based security, Parvus' fingerprint sensor hardware implements Fujitsu's MBF solid-state fingerprint sensors on the stackable, compact PC/104 form factor (90 x 96mm). The embeddable board design also integrates a heartbeat sensor (to prevent unauthorised access via a false finger) and direct ISAbus interface to the Fujitsu chip (versus only a parallel port connection).

2. Tiny module is complete Bluetooth 1.1 reference

New from BrightCom Technologies, Elara is an ultra-small reference design of a complete Bluetooth 1.1-compliant module. Measuring only 17 x 32 x 5mm, the Elara Bluetooth application module is based on BrightCom's new IntelliBlue BIC2102 application processor, along with an RF module and up to 1Mbyte of Flash memory. This "daughterboard" design easily connects to a customer's system board via a system connector and is compact enough to be built into a small product, such as an HID peripheral, serial dongle, host or device USB dongle or a PCM/CVSD voice module for an audio headset and gateway.

3. Digital RF enables sub-$4 single-chip Bluetooth

Texas Instruments reckons the BRF6100 is the first single-chip Bluetooth solution to integrate a digital RF processor and Bluetooth baseband on one chip to reduce cost and minimise board space. The BRF6100 is the first implementation of TI's digital RF architecture and uses TI's standard 0.13-micron, copper CMOS manufacturing process to deliver considerable advantages over existing Bluetooth RF technology. By designing a digital RF CMOS architecture, TI has removed many of the challenges associated with current RF devices.

4. I2C switches aren't confused by addresses

Philips has developed the first family of I2C-controlled switches that can connect multiple devices with the same I2C address on a single bus - a task that previously required multiple I2C buses or bus switches. By using Philips' PCA954x I2C switches, design engineers can greatly simplify board layouts for cost savings and additional flexibility. This breakthrough product is significant because of the wide range of applications in the computing, communication, telecomms, networking, industrial and consumer markets that depend on sharing one I2C bus with multiple devices with the same I2C address.

5. Monitor keeps tabs on static control measures

Static Control Components' dual-wire constant wrist strap monitor has been designed to ensure that ESD control is working by constantly testing the connection integrity of the person, the wristband, the wrist strap's coiled cord and bench mat connections. Moreover it simplifies compliance and record keeping for quality assurance programmes and reduces production costs by eliminating the need to check wrist straps at the start of each shift. The system is automatically activated when a wrist strap is connected to the remote jack point, a green light showing safe conditions and a red light and warning tone signalling unsafe conditions.

6. Transceiver cuts DWDM cost, size and power budgets

The Finisar FTR-1631 transceiver offers DWDM transport with dramatically lower power and cost in a standard pluggable GBIC package. Using Finisar's advanced optical technology, the FTR-1631 is designed expressly for service providers deploying DWDM networking equipment in metropolitan access and core networks. Also, the new transceiver opens up a new possibility for LAN equipment makers with GBIC ports to use DWDM transport for optical networking applications.

7. Rework system focuses on array packages

The APR-5000 array package rework system is an advanced, versatile system offering the repeatability, accuracy and thermal control essential for the safe and effective rework of today's leading-edge BGA, CSP, land grid array (LGA), micro SMD, micro-lead frame (MLF) and bumped chip component packages. Capable of handling boards up to 203 x 254mm (8 x 10in) with a placement accuracy to 0.0254mm (0.001in) and interconnection pitches as low as 0.3mm, the APR-5000 array package rework system is ideal for reworking smaller PCBs such as cellphones and laptop computers.

The QuickUse Repository is an off-the-shelf IP repository based on the proven QuickUse Development System knowledge management infrastructure from Mentor Graphics. The QuickUse Repository provides a web-based design data management system to enable enterprise-wide IP management, distribution and qualification for improved design reuse efficiency and product quality. Mentor Graphics also announced that Agere Systems, the world's second-ranked ASIC provider, has adopted the QuickUse Repository as the IP infrastructure for its global design teams.

10. Novel cooling scheme shrinks CPU heatsinks

The SkyJet CPU cooler from JMC Products features Agilent's patented dual-pass airflow architecture. The SkyJet is designed specifically for future Intel Pentium 4 desktop and server processors, up to 75W. JMC's new heatsink assembly transfers heat more efficiently due to its advanced cooling capabilities. The SkyJet is a radial-fin heatsink that uses dual-pass airflow by taking air in from the top and all sides of the heatsink, creating a vacuum and expelling added airflow through the bottom of the heatsink.
