Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Today, for once, I fully intend to be mercifully brief. For while I fully appreciate that Electronicstalk is increasingly becoming a global resource, at the same time I appreciate that most of you are off enjoying part two of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of our own Queen Elizabeth II.
And while Electronicstalk would never be so parochial as to take the day off on a UK Public Holiday, it is worth mentioning that pretty much all of what we now know as the global electronics industry has come into being during the last 50 years.
What's more, with the average tenure in our business measured more in months, 50 years is a heck of a long time to hold down the same job.
So join me please in raising a glass and proposing a toast: "The Queen, God bless her".
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have thousands of engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company.
In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Software-controlled management saves handheld life
The PMU+ is a single-chip power management unit with a real-time software control feature that can reduce power consumption by up to 70% in smart phones and wireless PDAs. This software-control feature allows the Philips PMU+ to continuously adjust voltages throughout a handheld device minimising power consumption and extending battery life. A wireless PDA or smart phone using the PMU+ could run up to three times longer.

2. Low noise floor aids accelerometer tilt resolution
An ultra-low-noise device is the latest in the successful line of standard submicron CMOS accelerometers from Memsic. Because of its low noise floor and high degree of accuracy, the new accelerometer has proven to be well suited for automotive applications - such as car alarms, rollover, and navigational devices - and in consumer electronics, such as PDAs, cellphones and global positioning systems (GPS).

3. Verification system crosses clock domains
Real Intent has added formal clock intent verification to its flagship electronic design verification system Verix. Assertion-based formal clock intent verification analyses and exhaustively verifies the stability and correctness of data transfer between clock domains. Clock Intent verification automatically identifies the clock domains and the hazards for signals crossing those domains. It further advises the designer about appropriate assertions to formally verify the data transfer. All the user needs to supply is the RTL and to identify clocks.

4. Reference design puts Bluetooth on USB ports
Widcomm and Texas Instruments have unveiled a new Bluetooth USB dongle reference design providing easy-to-use, low-cost Bluetooth functionality for electronic devices. The reference design combines USB plug-and-play with fully embedded Bluetooth functionality. The Widcomm/TI dongle allows wireless connectivity between a PC and peripherals, printers, or mobile phones and provides Bluetooth functionality without the need for software installation and configuration.

5. DWDM transceiver has hot-pluggable bonus
Agilent Technologies has developed the industry's first hot-pluggable dense wavelength division multiplex (DWDM) transceiver. The new device, slated for customer delivery later this year, will allow network service providers to plug in a DWDM transceiver exactly when and where it's needed, and at any wavelength, reducing inventory costs. The transceiver will also eliminate system downtime during upgrades and service calls. And its multirate operation (from 155Mbit/s to 2.7Gbit/s) allows operators to offer flexible service.

6. Handheld analyser gains further GPRS capability
NetTest has added further GPRS network testing features to its Lite 3000 series of handheld network testing instruments for fixed and mobile networks, positioning it as the first in its class to offer all-level signalling decoding of the GPRS Abis interface protocol. The new release will enable GPRS Abis interface testing on both the Lite 3000E and Lite 3000, making the Lite 3000 series the most complete handheld test solution for the installation and maintenance of GSM and GPRS, with solutions optimised to individual customer needs.

8. Chipset aids cost-effective Sonet/SDH upgrades
PMC-Sierra reckons its Chess-III chipset establishes a new benchmark for technology and innovation in aggregating, grooming and transporting 2.5 and 10Gbit/s metro services. Chess-III simplifies design and network management and substantially reduces carrier systems costs. The chipset enables OEMs to leverage deployed line cards into new and more advanced systems, thereby preserving existing service provider investment and infrastructure.

9. Coaxial lightning protector keeps surges down
The DSX-D coaxial lightning protector is a weatherproof passive filter design with DC blocking from surge-side centre pin to equipment-side centre pin. The device is a drop-in replacement for any cellular or PCS protector in an application that does not require DC on the centre conductor. Comprehensive testing has shown low surge throughout, measuring significantly less than 10uJ at 30kA (8/20us waveform).

10. Novel controller cuts costs of capacitive screens
eGalax has developed a novel low-cost capacitive touch screen controller. Capacitive touch screens are completely immune to environmental contaminants like water, dust, dirt and grease. This makes them more durable and reliable than other types of touch screen, and consequently they have traditionally been more expensive than resistive systems. Touch screen manufacturers can easily include the new controller in their existing designs.
