Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Even with the large pinch of salt with which I generally season any market research, this week's survey results from the organisers of the UK Nepcon exhibition make pleasant reading (see below). And the news will be particularly welcome in the beleaguered manufacturing and test equipment sectors.

A cynic (and lord knows I've been accused of being one) would repost "Well they would say that wouldn't they?". But the comparison with similar statistics from the preceding year is compelling.

Last week's editorial comment on the joys of repair and recycling brought more than the usual level of feedback. These ranged from those pointing out that replacement would lead to the use of more modern (and hence more efficient) technology to those who were determined to repair until there was nothing left of the original equipment to repair (rather like my own PC!).

However, none of these responses really addresses the problems of recycling the unwanted equipment, whether it be a completely discarded appliance or a removed and replaced subassembly.

And I must agree with Electronicstalk reader Ron Carter who points out that the practice of shipping discarded equipment to the third world in the name of "appropriate technology" is no longer acceptable. Let's face it, if the developed nations of Europe, the Americas and Asia cannot find a cost effective way of coping with pollution, there is little hope that other nations will be able to afford the solution.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have thousands of engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Diversity solution boosts cellular coverage

Semiconductor startup Innovics Wireless has developed a novel diversity solution which increases capacity and datarate and improves coverage in 2.5 and 3G cells, without any modifications to the basestation or infrastructure. Diversity processing can be incorporated into any mobile device. It increases the average datarate available per user by combining signals from two separate antennas, and by making full use of signals that have arrived at the terminal via different paths - for instance after being reflected from buildings or hills.

2. Emulator rips through real-time development

To help designers of real-time embedded applications to pinpoint and resolve real-time problems quickly and precisely, TI has added the fastest generation of JTAG emulation technology to its real-time eXpressDSP software and development tools. Compatible with previous TI emulators, the new technology features a high-speed real-time data exchange (RTDX) that transfers data bidirectionally between the target processor and the host development platform at more than 2Mbyte/s for unprecedented levels of real-time application visibility. It also offers code download speeds at up to 0.5Mbyte/s, enabling rapid start-up of larger applications.

3. Assertion-based verification finds errors early

Cadence Design Systems has enhanced its Verification Cockpit offering with new assertion-based verification (ABV) technology supporting the Sugar 2.0 Accellera standard language. Cadence has also announced SystemC open language support, for design and verification in its NC-Sim and open-source TestBuilder products. These moves demonstrate the company's commitment to improve design productivity through solutions based on industry standards and open interfaces.

4. Data acquisition system takes Ethernet onboard

Keithley Instruments reckons its Model 2701 Ethernet-ready DMM/data acquisition system is the industry's first multipoint measurement and control system that fully integrates instrument-quality, 22bit (6.5-digit) resolution and sensitivity with Ethernet long-distance networking. Precision instrumentation can now be distributed over long distances using a de facto standard communication bus. Users can devote fewer operators and fewer PCs per test station, while realising higher productivity and lower costs.

5. Programmable chip combines radio and audio

The SAF7730 is a dual-IF car radio and audio DSP claimed to provide excellent radio and audio quality. Developed by Philips, the chip is cost optimised, technically advanced and flexible. User-specific functions can be configured to match the software platform required for the car radio manufacturers' system, providing a high level of product differentiation. By integrating the radio and audio software functions onto one chip, the software radio requires fewer external components, which further reduces costs.

6. VoIP multiprocessor intgrates six DSPs and memory

The TNETV3010 multiprocessor integrates six ultra-high-performance TMS320C55x DSP cores and carries a full 24Mbit of on-chip SRAM - one of the largest integrated memories available today. More impressively, while consuming 50 times less power, the TNETV3010 contains over three times the transistor count of a high-performance PC processor on a die almost one-fifth the size.

7. SoC architecture for terrestrial DTV

Zarlink Semiconductor is previewing a novel SoC architecture for terrestrial DTV consumer products with global electronics manufacturers. Zarlink's scaleable SoC architecture integrates six external components - including, for the first time, digital terrestrial demodulators - into one powerful digital TV processor. This innovative architecture will allow customers to cut the size, cost and time-to-market of high performance DTV products.

8. Fast-slewing op amps keep the power low

Micrel Semiconductor reckons its two latest high-speed op amps provide an order of magnitude improvement in the ratio of slew rate to power consumption when compared with competing devices. The MIC920 and MIC921 are decompensated derivatives of the recently introduced MIC918 and MIC919. The devices combine high slew rates of 3000 and 3200V/us with low power consumption of 550 and 360uA, respectively.

9. RTL performance prototyping characterises soft IP

Synopsys has introduced an RTL performance prototyping (RPP) flow using Physical Compiler, targeted toward IP providers and IP integrators. Adoption of the new flow enables IP providers to quickly characterise their soft IP against a complete set of end technologies, configurations and floorplans, and also dramatically reduces the time and effort required to integrate this IP into complex SoC designs.

10. Lighting tester provides the whole in one

Now that the majority of modern lighting designs contain electronic ballasts and starting devices, problems can be encountered when applying AC high voltage flash tests (1500V AC) during routine production line testing. Changes to the BS EN60598 lighting standard have allowed the manufacturer to omit this test, in favour of a DC insulation resistance test. But this creates a problem because the flash test is very good for finding weaknesses in insulation or poor manufacturing procedures (such as wires in contact with the chassis), and this is unlikely using a mere 500V DC insulation resistance test.
