Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

I’ve been self-righteous about it before (and I’ll no doubt do it again), but it’s good to be green.
Let’s face it, the Climate Change Levy has been an excellent shot in the arm for the electric motors and drives sector. And all this while contributing to a reduction in CO2 emissions.

So what about recycling? It was around a year ago that we first heard of the delightfully abbreviated WEEE Directive, and now even the UK National Press is starting to take notice.

And while keen readers of Electronicstalk will have spotted that a number of component and subassembly manufacturers have been striving to reduce levels of dangerous pollutants such as lead in their products, it seems that nobody has actually worked out how to fully recycle waste electronic equipment.

At the risk of sounding old, I come from a bygone age where things were actually repaired. And, indeed this week the Marchini bank balance has been reduced to the tune of several hundred pounds, Euros and/or dollars by repairs to my PC, washing machine and tumble dryer.

Naturally, it would have cost more to replace them. But in each case, a replacement would have given me a higher-spec machine. (No doubt even the tumble dryer would have had at least 20 different options all programmable remotely via SMS.)

And there’s the rub: today’s consumers are more than happy to turn a potential repair into an opportunity to upgrade to the latest generation - and industry relies on this to maintain demand.

So when the debate begins, as it surely will, over who exactly will pay for the costs of the recycling entailed in the WEEE Directive, we had best remember who benefits from the scrapping of equipment in the first place.

For the record, both the washing machine and tumble dryer required new belts. The PC, on the other hand, now has a new (wait for it): graphics card, motherboard, enclosure, power supply and processor.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have well over six thousand engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Sideways look reduces LED profile

Elekon reckons the ESM-3070 series comprises the world's first range of side-looking surface mount LEDs, moulded in clear high-temperature material. The patent-pending GaP LEDs come in the green, yellow green, red and orange output ranges and are offered as IR emitters as well. Features include a total height of less than 1.20mm and a footprint of only 2.50mm.

2. Physical synthesis for multi-million-gate designs

Incentia Design Systems has entered the physical synthesis market with a new software product DesignCraft Pro. DesignCraft Pro delivers solutions from RTL to detailed placement with DFT and low power options. It is a natural extension of Incentia's static timing analyser, TimeCraft, and logic synthesiser, DesignCraft, both announced last year. All three products use a unified, tape-out proven timing engine to ensure timing consistency between implementation and timing sign-off.

3. Slimline packaging shrinks MOSFETs further

Toshiba Electronics has launched a new generation of miniature chip scale power MOSFET packages that are over 60% thinner than conventional TO-220SM (D2PAK) devices yet require 30% less PCB mounting area. The new 'slim TFP' package represents an evolution of Toshiba's thin flat package (TFP) technology and delivers a maximum board mounting area of 10.7 x 9.2mm. A profile of just 1.7mm is 45% lower than the previous generation of TFP devices.

5. Tool brings order to mixed-IP SoC designs

SpyGlass SoC is the first design tool to address the logical issues designers encounter when integrating multiple IP blocks from different vendors and design teams into one complex SoC design. By using SpyGlass SoC to create a logical virtual prototype, designers can predict and eliminate problems that normally only show up much later in the design process. With SpyGlass SoC, design teams can cut their overall SoC design times by 20 to 30%, according to company estimates.

6. High-efficiency half brick is lighter and thinner

High power density coupled with high efficiency make Lambda's new PAH half-brick DC/DC power modules ideal for a host of telecommunications, computing and distributed power architectures. With a nominal input voltage of 48V, the single-output 200W PAH200H48 series offers a choice of output voltage of 1.8, 2.5 or 3.3V. The new DC/DC convertor boasts a power density of 72.4W/in3 and power efficiency of 90% at an output of 3.3V. Such high efficiency has eliminated the need for baseplate cooling under normal temperature conditions, allowing Lambda to produce a half-brick design that is both lighter and thinner.
