Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

It's nice to know you're there (as the old football chant used to go). Seriously, though, feedback is always welcome, whether it be a gratuitous pat on the back or a moan… to say nothing of real hard information.

In that third category I am indebted to Electronicstalk reader Iain Fraser who picked up on last week's theme of distributed computing. And while the release of the latest Star Wars episode may have many of us fantasising about the search for extraterrestrial life, Iain was quite correct to highlight the THINK project as a far more worthwhile use for all our surplus computing power in cancer research.

A visit to http://members.ud.com/projects/cancer/ will explain all. (Although I was a little worried about the line that in participating in the project "Your computer never leaves your desk…". Probably not the best way to attract laptop users, is it?)

However, even when taking part in such a laudable project, you should never forget to take suitable precautions - particularly following the news that the current Klez.h virus is the third most widespread in history. And I sympathise deeply with all those of you who have contracted it.

Sadly, it seems, many of you have, and have tried inadvertently to pass it on to me. (Ah well, there has to be a down side to the ever-increasing numbers subscribing to this, our weekly news digest.)

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have thousands of engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company.

In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Higher density and less power from ADSL chipset

GlobespanVirata describes its Titanium G24 as the world's first 24-channel ADSL chipset aimed at next generation DSLAM, Mini DSLAM, and DLC designs. Titanium G24 delivers significant cost savings for equipment manufacturers and service providers. Maximising the number of ports on a single line card simplifies line card design through fewer components, optimised routing, and a reduced number of printed circuit board layers.

2. Multichip package crams eight into one

Fujitsu Microelectronics has developed an ultra-high-density multichip package (MCP) that can support up to eight chips. This development was made possible by the company's advances in thin chip processing and multistacked package technology. Thin chip processing is a special wafer-support technology that permits chips to be polished down to a thickness of only 0.025mm, and multistacked package is a technology which enables the stacking of boards mounted with chips using lead-free solder balls.
