Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Could it be that the component market really is recovering? A glance at the past week's financial results below from the likes of ARC, Fairchild and QuickLogic all show positive signs. And it has even been mooted that the main reason for today's breakdown in the long-running Micron Technology bid to buy Hynix Semiconductor is the optimism of Hynix shareholders over the state of the memory market.

Mind you, if the market is indeed recovering, it would be a brave person who would point to any single factor which might be causing it.

There is certainly no new "big thing" of the ilk of the PC or mobile telephone. Even that seeming dead-cert success, the games console market is struggling, with Microsoft being forced to cut prices to compete (and that's a phrase you don't hear very often!).

Perhaps the world is beginning to return to normal. The train of events started on 11th September 2001 have been blamed for many things, including the recent postponement of an electronics exhibition. Certainly, a global conflict is not exactly beneficial for world trade, but perhaps the excuse is wearing a little thin.

If recovery really is on the way, it's time for people to stop making excuses and get on with it.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have thousands of engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Novel substrate makes PCBs 50% slimmer

Nitto Denko Corp has developed an ultra-thin multilayer flexible printed circuit substrate that measures half the thickness of existing circuit boards and has outstanding wiring density. A four-layer substrate measures 0.2mm, while an eight-layer substrate is a mere 0.35mm thick. The substrate's wiring density has a line-to-space ratio of 50 x 50um and contributes to the reduction in substrate thickness.

2. Budget EDA tools boosted to tackle high-end design

EDA software supplier Electronics Workbench, which has pioneered the more widespread use of PCB design software with its widely used Multisim, Ultiboard and Ultiroute products, is moving up to take on the traditional higher-end EDA market with two new product suites. The Electronics Workbench Professional and PowerPro suites integrate the Multisim 2001, Ultiboard 2001 and Ultiroute applications used by over 150,000 users worldwide. The resulting package competes on performance with the long-established EDA tools normally referred to as the high end of the market, but at a far lower cost.

3. Budget scopes claim new performance benchmarks

Tektronix has two new oscilloscope families it reckons establish a new benchmark for performance and ease-of-use among instruments in the low-cost oscilloscope market. Applications for low-cost oscilloscopes are diverse and the market for these instruments is extremely competitive. Both families are priced to meet the budget constraints of users with applications as varied as basic electronic repair tasks, automated production test and monitoring of environmental sensors, design and debug of microprocessors in a myriad of consumer electronics, and education in universities and technical training centres.

4. Big Flash and handy peripherals for 32bit MCUs

A new family of MCUs from Motorola comes complete with embedded Flash memory and highly sophisticated on-chip peripherals, making them well suited for a variety of avionics, manufacturing and industrial control applications. Each member of the growing MPC500 family features a 32bit RISC core, compliant with the PowerPC instruction set, as well as a floating-point unit. The MPC500 devices offer a variety of memory size options and I/O peripherals, such as time processor units, CAN interface modules and queued ADCs, among others.

The LX100 from Yokogawa Martron is a comprehensive portable test tool for the field troubleshooting of ADSL services over copper cable. The LX100 provides a graphical display of all the essential test data required for effective troubleshooting, including attenuation, noise, TDR measurements, burst noise waveform and complex impedance. Applications of the LX100 include verifying the signal/noise margin necessary for ADSL services, determining the locations of loading coils and bridge taps, estimating the source of crosstalk noise and burst noise, analysing NEXT (near-end crosstalk), extended time noise logging, and impedance measurement.

6. Passive solution to harmonic current compliance

Vicor has developed a new solution for compliance with EN harmonic current and EMI standards. Collectively referred to as "ENMods", it comprises a passive harmonic current attenuation module - the MiniHAM - and an autoranging AC/DC front-end module - the FARM3. Combined with a few additional filtering and holdup components as specified in the datasheet, the ENMods provide full compliance with: EN6100-3-2 Amendment 14 harmonic current content limits; EN55022 level B EMI limits; and EN6100-4-5 input surge withstand.
