Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
The purpose of language is communication. And, similarly, the purpose of standardised units is to communicate a quantity in terms that are clear to all.
Great in theory, isn't it. But I can't say I'm looking forward to explaining to my 8 month old son that the reason the bolts and nuts in his construction kit don't join up is because one was made in Europe, the other in the USA.
SI units and prefixes have been with us for an awfully long time: so why can't we all handle them?
Receiving, as we do, material from all round the world, there are some classic gaffes. For example, the prefix lower case k equals 1000, whereas the capital K from the computing world represents a binary quantity: two to the tenth power, or 1024. Many people erroneously treat them as interchangeable.
Similarly, there seems to be a move afoot to shorten the bit to just a lower-case b (pretty daft when the word bit is a contraction of binary digit in the first place). It is, of course inconsistent, generally used in describing memory capacities (eg 1Mb). Strangely, the perpetrators of this strange contraction still refer to a 64bit processor.
I appreciate there is little point in lambasting any nation for a failure to metricate. Miles will be around for a long time, the British will insist on a pint of beer and, no doubt, the USA will retain its own idiosyncratic gallon.
Personally, I have no problem with dual standards, where they make sense. Semiconductor process technologies have always been metric. The progression from microns to nanometres makes a lot more sense than describing such small quantities in fractions of inches. However, when these devices are put on boards, I have no problem with the use of connectors with a 0.1in pitch.
So while we endeavour to follow SI units wherever possible, there are cases where Imperial makes more sense. There really in no point in being dogmatic.
Some 11 years ago on a golfing trip to New Zealand I was a little flummoxed by each scorecard informing me that "Marker posts on each hole indicate 137m to the centre of the green". A more bloody-minded piece of soft metrication would be hard to find.
But then last week I received information about a product housed in a package measuring 3.94 x 1.97 x 0.39in (and for those of you who haven't twigged it, that's 100 x 50 x 10mm). Now, that's what I call dogmatic.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have thousands of engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Logic package is a quarter the size of TSSOP
Philips has developed what it claims to be the world's smallest logic IC package. The depopulated very-thin quad flat-pack no-leads (DQFN) package - for logic gates and octal ICs - is meant to address the market needs for smaller electronic products and components. The DQFN package enhances miniaturisation of the circuit board and frees board space for additional components and functions. Designed with a footprint of 2.5 by 3mm in a 14-pin configuration, the DQFN package is 75% smaller than existing TSSOPs.

2. Ultra-fast LDO powers cores down to 0.9V
Providing a well-regulated supply for next-generation processor cores, the first of a new family of ultra-low-output-voltage high-current LDOs is now available from Micrel Semiconductor. Capable of output voltages down to 0.9V, the MIC49150 is a 1.5A dual-supply low-dropout regulator that responds instantly to any abrupt change in load current. The main supply to the device requires only 500mV headroom, or dropout voltage, under worst case conditions to maintain proper regulation, while a second, higher voltage provides bias voltage to the control circuit. The MIC49150 supports an input voltage as low as 1.4V.

3. Reference design points to optical mice
Cypress Semiconductor has developed a combination USB-PS/2 optical mouse reference design for PC pointing devices. Cypress collaborated with Agilent Technologies to offer a low-cost, full-featured optical mouse solution based on the Cypress CY7C63723 enCoRe (enhanced component reduction) USB microcontroller and Agilent's ADNS-2051 optical mouse sensor.

4. Novel Flash design provides 100% operative memory
Hitachi has released its new superAND type Flash memory, the first in the industry to incorporate a memory control function, providing a 100% operative memory area. This new type of memory offers improved operability, very low standby current and compact size, making it suitable for portable devices such as mobile phones, PDAs and digital cameras. Two series of the new 128Mbit Flash memory are available, the x8 and x16bit HN29V128A series operating at 3.3V and the x16bit HN29A128A series operating at 1.8V.

5. Fibre-optic bezel system puts adapters on panels
A novel bezel system for front panel mounting of fibre-optic adapters from Molex Fibre Optics extends flexibility and ease of use with both simplex and duplex versions. Designed to house a wide variety of fibre-optic adapters in a common panel cutout, bezels provide a key front or backplane access point for fibre-optic terminations in most datacommunications or telecommunications networks.

7. Additional detector brings enhanced imaging
The imaging versatility of the ultra-high resolution in-lens S-5200 FESEM from Hitachi High-Technologies Corporation has been enhanced with an optional electron detector for imaging backscattered electrons at low accelerating voltages. This new accessory takes full advantage of the outstanding resolution of the S-5200 of 1.8nm at 1kV. Backscattered electrons give valuable elemental composition information in an image, since contrast is dependent on the average atomic number of the material being imaged.

8. Bluetooth tester combines RF and interoperability
Advantest reckons its R4870 Bluetooth tester will help manufacturers ensure that their Bluetooth-enabled products and devices conform with the wireless technology's global specifications. Designed for use both within R and D laboratories (prequalification testing) and on manufacturing lines, the R4870 is the first Bluetooth conformance test system to combine in a single unit the ability to test both a product's radio-frequency characteristics and its interoperability with other Bluetooth-enabled products.

10. Microcontrollers show collective intelligence
Microchip reckons its latest 8-pin PICmicro Flash microcontrollers provide a complete solution for distributed intelligence applications. Traditional embedded control designs rely on a single processor that can impose higher costs and design limitations. Modern distributed intelligence systems use multiple processors to achieve greater design flexibility, reduced wiring, feature-rich end products, Internet connectivity and a lower total system cost.
