Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Could it be the power of the press? Just two weeks since I was extolling the virtues of extra memory for sorting out the average PC’s software shortcomings, the news arrives that memory prices are rising and show every sign of continuing to do so.

So much so that - horror of horrors - PC manufacturers are faced with the unheard of scenario of increasing prices. Apple and NEC have done it already, and Dell and HP will not be far behind (although the latter is rumoured to be considering keeping prices static while reducing memory specifications).

In theory this is all rather good news: in the absence of any tangible evidence of supply shortfalls, the only plausible explanation for the price rises must be increased demand.

However, I feel sure that there are many systems builders and OEMs out there living on slim margins who will not see the bright side so easily. Mind you, they could always put their prices up. (If it’s good enough for the likes of Apple and Dell…).

To continue the good news strand from previous newsletters, the EU finance ministers did the decent thing, as predicted last week, and gave the green light to Europe’s own satellite positioning service. I only hope they budgeted for increased memory prices in the GBP 2 billion project!

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We now have more than 5000 engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company.

In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

4. Transient suppressors shrink for portable uses

Semtech has released two families of transient voltage suppressors (TVSs) for 3.3V operation featuring extremely low clamping voltage and leakage current values. Designed to guard sensitive, low-voltage circuits against damage or latch-up caused by electrostatic discharge, lightning, and other destructive voltage transients, both the SMS3.3 and the SMF3.3 arrays protect up to four signal lines operating at 3.3V.

Texas Instruments has developed a pair of triple-output plug-in power solutions that provide three logic-level voltages as low as 1.2V. The modules are designed to provide three regulated low-voltage outputs for mixed logic applications, such as DSPs, ASICs and microprocessors. Both triple-output modules have a 50% smaller footprint than conventional single-output modules, reducing board space and costs.
