Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

It’s been a busy week for Electronicstalk keeping up with product launches at exhibitions and conferences on both sides of the Atlantic. And also from the USA, the week has seen interesting developments in two legal cases worth watching.

The first is a ruling that seems to doom BT’s attempt to claim the patent for the Internet hyperlink. The judge in that case has ruled that the Internet bears little resemblance to the type of network system in use at the time of the patent. So unless an appeal can be argued, it would appear we are all safe from having to pay royalties to www.bt.com .

The second came with the commencement of the latest chapter in what will surely become known as “everyone else versus Microsoft”.

This time it is nine US States that have brought the action, intended to break the company’s operating system monopoly. Microsoft’s preliminary defence appears to be based on dire warnings of a so-called “doomsday scenario” where it would be forced to withdraw Windows from the market, leaving millions of users with no support.

As one who tried last week to find some meaningful help to fix a nasty bout of IRQ contention brought about by a bug in Windows ME, I can’t honestly say I would notice any difference.

Mind you, as a defence, Microsoft’s “everybody hates us” stance might just draw some sympathy from the hardware business. Why? Well, having failed to find a suitable software fix for the glitch, I papered over the problem by installing another 128Mbyte of RAM.

Who says Microsoft is bad for the business?

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have thousands of engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company. 3. All-fibre attenuator has crucial bands covered

Protodel reckons it will set a new standard in the design, development and delivery of variable optical attenuators (VOAs) next week when it launches its Mark III product at the OFC Conference in Anaheim, California. Based on network designer feedback from the successful MkI and MkII devices, the Mark III is the only all-fibre attenuator to cover the crucial channel wavelength C, L and S bands in a single unit. It has been designed specifically to meet the increased optical power needs of the market and also the requirements of the ITU (International Telecommunications Union).

6. Frugal dual amplifier is cool performer

New from Analog Devices, the AD8039 is a dual voltage-feedback amplifier that, even at 350MHz, has exceptionally low quiescent current of 1mA typical per amplifier. The low power of the AD8039 will allow designers to minimise battery requirements and reduce cooling requirements which, in turn, will save cost and/or allow higher density boards.
