Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

It’s a neat trick if you can master it, and Nokia appears to have mastered it. This morning the mobile phone giant has managed to keep its income level up while its sales declined. Indeed, its latest guidance is that sales will fall further than expected, but that revenues would be higher than previously forecast.

It remains to be seen whether this is just a case of creative accounting or poor maths first time round. However, what is more worrying is the company’s news that its network infrastructure sales are substantially lower than expected.

For while it is the handset business that keeps component suppliers in business, it is the infrastructure that points to the longer term. No doubt news will come from CeBIT this week as to whether this problem is limited to Nokia.

And, yes, it is that time of year again. But chances are that if you’re reading this you’ve been spared the rigmarole of a trip to CeBIT. So sit back and read: Electronicstalk will be carrying all the major announcements from one of Europe’s premier shows, without requiring you to travel, change currency, fight for a hotel room or wear out shoe leather.

(No doubt, just to prove me wrong, somebody will e-mail me from their GSM-enabled laptop or PDA at the show. But that does assume there’s enough basestation capacity!)

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have around five thousand engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company.

In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

2. Handheld spectrum analyser is no lightweight

Anritsu reckons its MS2711B handheld spectrum analyser dramatically simplifies the testing and analysis of today's complex digital wireless signals, many of which are transmitted near the system noise level. New features of the 100kHz to 3GHz analyser include two powerful options: a preamplifier and tracking generator.

3. Inline furnace avoids solder voids

The new ATV reflow/vacuum inline furnace from PESL uses the proven ATV "no void" technology for soldering of bump modules, wafers, power devices and similar components. This is of value where, perfect connection is needed to minimise signal distortion or heat build-up. The multiple-platen furnace can handle wafers up to 300mm.

4. No snubber intended for CMOS power amp

New from Fairchild Semiconductor, the FAN7021 is a CMOS power amplifier for mobile phone, DECT phone, PDA and other portable applications. The FAN7021 produces up to 1W of low-distortion continuous output power (1.5W peak) with supply voltages from 2.0 to 5.5V. The device uses an integrated adaptive bias current control circuit to minimise crossover distortion even while consuming 54% lower quiescent supply current than other competitive devices.

5. Chip keeps an eye on complex comms waveforms

The AD8362 is the first RF IC designed to measure the complex modulated waveforms common to all next-generation wireless infrastructure equipment. The AD8362 performs a precise root-mean-square (RMS) power level measurement, providing the user with an accurately scaled, linear-in-decibels output voltage, critical in maintaining basestation output power efficiency and spectrum signal purity. These measurements are particularly challenging for the next generation cellular basestations employing 3G CDMA, W-CDMA and 2.5G Edge.

6. All the new videos run on DSP

H.26L, the emerging video coding draft standard from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), is now available on the TMS320C64x DSP family from Texas Instruments. With third-party partners, UB Video and Ingenient Technologies, TI is the first to deliver this new video coding technology designed for video telephony, video conferencing and streaming media applications. The H.26L video coding on the C64x DSP family offers excellent picture quality, very high code efficiency, low processing delay and error resilience to packet loss and bit errors.

9. Analyser speeds fibre testing in the field

The FTB-5800 chromatic dispersion analyser is a new high-performance test module for the EXFO FTB-400 field-testing platform, and is essential for deployments and upgrades of high-speed DWDM networks. As telecommunications carriers turn up datarates to 10 and 40Gbit/s on their high-speed optical networks and as spacing becomes tighter in DWDM systems, physical limitations like chromatic dispersion become increasingly problematic.
