Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Seven and counting: that’s the number of viruses that have arrived on my desktop so far this week… and it’s only Tuesday. But, as they say in the adverts, “I’m not bitter”.

Sadly, the route these viruses take to reach me generally involves one of you: the subscribers (both past and present) to the Electronicstalk Newsletter. And it’s easy to imagine the grief caused when a virus breaks through whatever software protection has been provided and sets about proliferating itself via the recipient’s address book.

Of course, we all intend to keep our virus protection up to date, but it’s easy to let things slip. And such is the nature of the beast that a moment’s lapse can lead to catastrophic infection. (What's more, a pound to a penny says if you haven’t updated your virus protection recently, then you surely don’t have an up-to-date system backup!)

That’s the nub of the problem… all these software solutions require human intervention.

So this week’s lead product from National Semiconductor certainly caught my eye (especially as its arrival coincided with my fourth virus of the week!).

Naturally, such hardware solutions also require human intervention: they need to be designed in with all due haste!

While we’re on the subject of things arriving on the desktop, you will shortly be receiving the pilot issue of Electronicstalk Extra, a special advertising supplement to the Electronicstalk Newsletter.

Electronicstalk Extra will have much the same format as the normal Electronicstalk Newsletter, but all its content will be paid-for advertising. This way we can maintain the regular newsletter as a concise advert-free digest of the week’s top stories.

Electronicstalk Extra should be with you before the end of the month. We hope you'll find it useful: if the products and services mentioned are worth an investment from the advertisers in getting the message to you, they should be worthwhile.

Meanwhile, I hope you find this issue of our regular newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes
