Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
It may just be a factor of getting older, but I feel progressively less cynical about the big guns of the industry (the hardware industry, that is).
My proof of this phenomenon came recently while attempting to justify the massive support being thrown behind the new Blu-Ray optical disk standard, as proposed by just about anybody who is anybody in consumer electronics.
There is no doubt that Blu-Ray with its 37Gbyte per disc capacity is an order of magnitude advance from the new generation of recordable DVDs it will surely replace (capable of only a puny 4.7Gbyte). And it is also worth noting that this is a standard that should stick (unlike the three incompatible standards for recordable DVDs).
But no, my devil’s advocate argued, surely this is just one more incompatible system, isn’t it? And of that there is no doubt.
In a world where the CD is a little more than 15 years old, and DVD is less than half that, what chance can any new and improved technology have of convincing the cynic that it has a shelf life before the next big thing comes along?
Blu-Ray has the added handicap that it requires a completely different laser diode than that used for DVDs and CDs, and so no backward compatibility is possible without a second laser system. (The only thing the discs have in common is their physical size.)
But in the long run, with a roll of support listing Philips, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Hitachi, Pioneer, Thomson and Sharp, Blu-Ray has every chance of success. If these nine can also demonstrate the true advantages of such huge storage capacities, its success is assured.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have thousands of engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company.

10. EMC amplifiers provide high-quality signals
Schaffner has expanded its EMC amplifier range with three new Class-A units, to complete its range for the EMC test signal requirements of IEC 6100-4-3 and other common standards, covering 10kHz to 3GHz. Given that amplifiers represent one the most expensive parts of any RF system, the company has engineered designs which exceed current compliance requirements significantly, ensuring the long-term provision of clean high-quality test signals.
