Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Why anyone should be surprised that Nokia has come out with gold- and platinum-plated handsets sure beats me. It's purely a natural progression in terms of differentiating a product that may be losing the attention of the public.

But it does beg the question: "who's next?"… a diamond-encrusted Hoover… or a Sterling silver oscilloscope?

Lets face it, who would remember Faberge as a egg producer if he hadn't had the idea of smartening them up a bit.

More seriously, though, I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. SM power package cracks two-way cooling conundrum

International Rectifier is claiming a breakthrough in surface-mount power MOSFET packaging technology with its DirectFET power packaging. The DirectFET packaging is the first surface-mount package in an SO-8 footprint designed for efficient top-side cooling. In combination with improved bottom-side cooling, the new package can be cooled on both sides to cut MOSFET part count by up to 60% and shrink board space by as much as 50% compared with an SO-8 type solution. This effectively doubles current density.

2. ADC boasts speed, accuracy and low power

Analog Devices claims its latest ADC is twice as fast, twice as precise and four times more power efficient than competitive parts. The AD7677 PulSAR 1Msample/s successive-approximation (SAR) ADC is accurate to 1LSB integral nonlinearity (INL), delivering industry-leading speed and precision to a variety of applications. ADI reached this new level of precision only months after the announcement of the AD7671, the first 1Msample/s 16bit SAR convertor.

3. Accelerator chip speeds mobile Java performance

New from Nazomi Communications, the JA108 Java accelerator chip improves Java software execution while extending battery life in mobile wireless applications, such as 2G/2.5G/3G phones. The JA108 offloads the microprocessor by taking over the task of executing Java bytecode instructions quickly and power-efficiently and thus speeds up Java software execution by 15x to 60x, depending on the application.

5. Soft magnetic material makes greener motors

Sumitomo Electric Industries (SEI) has developed a sintered material that can be used as a soft magnetic material in high-performance actuators for automobile components and high-speed rotary motors used in hard disk drives. The material is made from fine magnetic iron powder several tens of micrometers in diameter, which is coated with an insulating layer several hundreds of nanometers thick.

6. Module puts six-digit DMM onboard

Designers can embed precision, customised measuring capabilities into PXI, PCI, Compact PCI or VMEbus platforms with the M-76 multimeter module from Sequoia's Industrial Systems Division. The module is also suitable for busless systems. The MEN Mikroelektronik M-76 precision digital system multimeter extends Sequoia's range of mezzanine I/O modules based on the ANSI M-Module standard to over 100 different types.

9. No schematics required for new complex PCB designs

Innoveda has developed HDL2PCB, the industry's first schematic-free HDL-to-PCB design technology, designed to dramatically shorten the development cycle for complex PCBs. This novel, vendor-independent, language-based design methodology provides easy access to HDL (hardware design language) simulation and verification, and a tight connection to system-level design, reducing the product release risks involved with integrating large, complex devices on a PCB.
