Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

I hate to gaze too deeply, navel-wards, but a theme appears to recur.

My thanks are due to Electronicstalk newsletter subscriber Vic Plichota for reminding me of one of our continual bugbears. Says Vic: "It would be nice if links from the story pointed to the actual product webpage (if such exists), not just the manufacturer's homepage".

Those wishing to experience the full Editorial rant should read my colleague Chris Rand's last Engineeringtalk newsletter (http://www.engineeringtalk.com/news/doc/doc596.html). The bad news is that the electronics engineering community is scarcely better off. Such information is scarcely volunteered, and if not, rarely forthcoming on request.

In part this can be put down to un-co-ordinated marketing… in part to a lack of communications between outside agencies. However, it is fairly damning upon a supposedly technology-oriented industry that the Internet marketing side of the business has been left behind.

As one who dabbles between web-based journalism and marketing, the irony is too strong to ignore.

Meanwhile…I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have thousands of engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Analysis tool checks testability of RTL code

SpyGlass DFT is the latest addition to Atrenta's popular SpyGlass predictive analysis tool that adds two new engines to find testability issues at RTL (register-transfer level) that normally only can be identified at the gate level. According to Atrenta, no other tool can provide the comprehensive range of testability analysis offered by SpyGlass DFT. SpyGlass DFT includes rules for ATPG and BIST. If RTL designers don't properly apply testability rules at the initial design stage, the design can have poor test coverage or even be untestable until extensive changes are made. By letting designers write their RTL code to comply with testability rules before lengthy synthesis and simulation cycles, SpyGlass DFT can cut weeks or months off design cycles, eliminating or reducing gate-level debug and costly schedule delays.

2. Speedy 5ns performance from 768-cell CPLD

Lattice Semiconductor has released the ispMACH 5768VG, featuring 768 high-performance logic macrocells, the smallest member of the ispMACH 5000VG SuperBIG CPLD family. This release continues to expand the 3.3V-ispMACH 5000VG family, which also includes the previously released 1024-macrocell ispMACH 51024VG device. This in-system programmable (ISP) logic family, which provides up to double the logic capacity of Lattice's popular ispLSI 5000VE devices, includes new features such as advanced I/O standard (GTL+, HSTL, SSTL etc) sysIO support and sysCLOCK phase locked loops (PLLs).

3. Tiny op amps optimised for speedy slewing

Two high-speed op amps from Micrel - MIC918 and MIC919 - achieve a slew rate of 1500V/us while consuming just 550 and 360uA, respectively. Both op amps are voltage-feedback, unity-gain stable devices and are housed in SC70-5 packaging. The MIC918 has a gain-bandwidth product of 51MHz and the MIC919 has a gain-bandwidth product of 27MHz.

6. Analogue signals acquired at streaming speeds

Among fast analogue input boards, fully streaming architecture which collects samples without stopping the A/D convertor sample clock, is still uncommon. Some products must stop sampling when the onboard memory becomes full. But combining continuous A/Ds with a dual-channel streaming analogue output section (D/A) is extremely rare. Datel's new wideband PCI-4174 board for desktop PCI computers handles both tasks simultaneously.

Lambda has unveiled the new 20W X20, the latest addition to its X-Series of DC/DC convertors. The arrival of the new unit means that the X-Series now comprises 20, 15, and 10W models. The X20 is the first to be offered in a choice of both through-hole and surface mount types. The surface mount version, the SX20, is ideal for designers looking to move to a fully automated production process.
