Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

I must admit to a little fraud: this newsletter contains far more than this week's top stories, it's the pick of the last three weeks. So apologies if it's a little larger than usual, but while the vast majority of you have been celebrating the holiday season, time and technology waits for nobody.

So what can you expect from Electronicstalk in 2002?

The short answer is "more of the same". Our single most important mission is to develop into an ever-expanding archive of information for the electronics design community. But at the same time we will never cease to question the news-worth of each story we cover.

Perhaps in the current climate the biggest success is that we're still here. So maybe we're doing something right after all!

Finally, for this week, I must return to a story from last summer, when the Electronicstalk Editorial office was struck by lightning. And while the office (built of good Cornish stone with a grossly overspecified Victorian lightning conductor) survived, the telephone lines did not. That it took British Telecom some two weeks to restore service was not a surprise, bearing in mind the severity of the storm that caused the damage.

That the only compensation offered was a refund of the line rental was not only a surprise, it was an insult.

I mention this now because Electronicstalk no longer relies on British Telecom for its communications requirements, having moved offices from its former secret location in Cornwall, SW England, to a new secret location.

So you can imagine my delight when, while packing computers into boxes I was told of BT's trial rollout of subsidised broadband services to small businesses in… Cornwall.

Ah, well… happy new year.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Transceiver puts VDSL on existing telco spectrum

Zarlink Semiconductor has produced silicon samples of the industry's first DMT-based data transceiver to fully meet international standards for four-band, 12MHz VDSL. Using Zarlink's DMT transceiver, equipment companies can boost the efficiency of VDSL modems. VDSL is an emerging standard for the symmetrical (same speed in both directions) transmission of high bandwidth services at up to 52Mbit/s over short distances using standard copper telephone lines.

2. Ribbon alternative cuts cost space and weight

Flat Flexible Cable (FFC) from Imperial Connector Systems is a low-cost high-reliability easy-to-use PCB interconnect system. The length, number of ways, pitch and type of termination are all customer specified to suit their applications. The cables are produced on high tech machines which laminate flat tin-plated copper conductors between polyester-based insulating films, and each is 100% tested.

3. All-round transducer adds ultrasonics to old baths

Kerry Ultrasonics has added a new style of submersible ultrasonic transducer/generator to its product range. The Sonopush, a robust titanium rod, delivers a powerful ultrasonic cleaning action but is also highly compact. Due to its small footprint, the transducer is easily retrofitted into existing cleaning and rinsing tanks, including those that were not originally designed for ultrasonic operation.

4. ATE goes desktop for Flash characterisation

Advantest reckons its new T5771ES Flash memory test system will allow design engineers to perform testing while still at their desks. Designed for use within R and D labs, the T5771ES is a scaled down version of Advantest's T5771 front-end Flash memory test system that gives users access to the latter system's testing performance, but in a quieter, more economical, energy-efficient unit. The T5771ES provides design engineers with a compact solution that gets rid of the need to schedule time on a manufacturing-line test system in order to evaluate devices under development.
