Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Welcome to the final Electronicstalk Newsletter of our debut year 2001: and what a year it's been.
Ever-increasing numbers of you have been clicking on to the Electronicstalk website, which in turn has grown rather like Topsy. And still more are signing up for the newsletter. So we must be doing something right!
Many of the highs and lows of the year are still all too fresh in the mind. But in the area of business success and failure, the lead story under today's company news puts matters in a nutshell, with the spectacular fall from grace of Marconi counterbalanced by the new rising stars such as Bookham.
And what can we hope for in 2002? Well, peace on earth and goodwill to all men may be a little too much to ask for. Perhaps an end to malicious computer viruses? (I know this will strike a chord with quite a few of our readers whose infected address books have tried to pass on some of the latest variants to this office!)
To avoid filling your inboxes with mail over the holiday season, the next issue of the Electronicstalk Newsletter will hit your desktop on Tuesday 8th January 2002. We will however be keeping a skeleton crew at work during the festive season, and the website will be kept up to date with all the news when it happens.
In the meantime, I hope you find this issue useful. As ever, in addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Digital power amplifier boosts 3G basestations
Wireless Systems International (WSI) is to show the first production 3GPP-compliant digital power amplifier at the 3GSM World Congress 2002 in Cannes. The new WSI digital power amplifier delivers more than 12% efficiency - representing at least a 3% improvement over traditional feed forward solutions - as well as using considerably reduced RF silicon for greater reliability and cost-efficiency. The net result is a 3G power amplifier that reduces the cost investment in this major basestation component, while at the same time providing enhanced performance and the potential for significant cost savings through reduced power consumption and improved system reliability.

2. Software converts scanned drawings into DXF files
Scan2CAD Pro is a fast low-cost raster to vector convertor which turns scanned images (raster files) of drawings, schematics, artwork, logos etc, into a DXF (vector) file for quick and easy editing in any PC CAD, CAM, schematics or PCB program, thereby saving redrawing time. Scan2CAD is necessary because a scanned image cannot be edited in a CAD, CAM or PCB program. It can only be viewed (like a photo) and traced over but not edited (like a CAD or PCB file).

3. All-new bipolar process comes on stream
Zetex's first internally developed bipolar IC process has begun production. The culmination of a three-year project, the ZA process forms the basis to a completely new family of audio and video signal processing products. The first new product to be released from the ZA process is a quad high-speed amplifier for high-integrity video signal management. In the pipeline are audio amplifier, sync signal separator, filter and buffer components.

4. In-system reprogrammable 5th-order lowpass filter
Lattice Semiconductor has added to its ispPAC programmable analogue device family with the ispPAC81 in-system programmable continuous time filter. The ispPAC81 implements tens of thousands of 5th-order lowpass filters with corner frequencies ranging from 10 to 75kHz. It can implement filters in Butterworth, Chebychev, elliptical and other topologies.

5. Easy migration from PADS to P-CAD
Altium has a new PADS to P-CAD design translator. The seamless conversion of Altium's newly developed translator will finally enable designers to access all their PADS designs in P-CAD 2001. This means that PCB designers can now move to the powerful, cost effective PCB design platform without the loss of any intellectual property.

7. New package shrinks optocouplers for compact comms
Fairchild Semiconductor has developed a new half-pitch mini-flat package configuration for optocouplers. The half-pitch mini-flat package features four surface-mount leads on 1.27mm spacing, and has a 61% smaller footprint than a four-pin dual-inline surface mount package. This makes it ideal for telecommunications, power conversion, and industrial control applications where small component size is crucial.
