Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Given the "Johnny-come-lately" nature of the electronics business, the concept of a centenary is a novel one. And so it would have been remiss of me to let one slip by unnoticed.
Tomorrow is the centenary of the first (successfully received) transatlantic radio transmission. And given that a hundred years is such a short timespan in cosmic terms, it is truly humbling to consider the advances that have occurred during that period.
Interestingly enough, it was 100 years ago today that the transmitter on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall, first started transmitting. But Marconi, at the receiving end in Newfoundland could not confirm reception thanks to high winds bringing down his antenna.
So I will wait until 12.30 GMT tomorrow before raising a glass to my near-namesake. (I wonder what he'd make of the Internet.)
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

1. New Flash cell makes memories smaller and faster
Hitachi has developed a new AG-AND (assist gate-AND) type Flash memory cell, its first gigabyte-generation Flash memory. Using a 0.13-micron process, the cell offers a fast write speed of 10Mbyte/s for a multilevel memory, compared with current write speeds of 2Mbyte/s. It also offers a small cell size of 0.052um2, which represents a size reduction of more than 50% compared with a conventional 0.18-micron process product.

4. RSLICs and DSP combine in development platform
Intersil is combining its subscriber line interface circuits (SLICs) with DSPs from VoicePump, to create a new four-channel, voice-over-packet (VoP) development platform and reference design. The combination provides manufacturers of low- to medium-density voice gateways and integrated access devices with a more cost-effective short-time-to-market system. The reference design combines the space and power savings of four Intersil HC55185 ringing SLICs in a micro-lead-frame (MLF) package with VoicePump's programmable four-channel VP140 mixed-signal DSP.
