Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Europe may be lagging its way to actually implementing 3G mobile services, but at least its mobile manufacturers are finding some alternative employment with the news that US operator Cingular Wireless has placed $4 billion worth of orders with the likes of Ericsson, Nokia and Siemens.
In some ways the move could be seen as counter-productive. The USA has doggedly held on to its TDMA mobile mentality while all around have been adopting GSM. As a result, handset manufacturers have been forced into some pretty nifty design techniques just to produce a handset that will work both sides of the Atlantic.
But now it seems the "not-invented-here" syndrome has been overcome: Cingular is the second US operator to announce a GSM network, initially with EDGE capability and with the intention of full 3G functionality.
So, among other things, G is for Global after all.

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. FPGA cores aim to beat DSPs at floating point
Nallatech has launched a fully IEEE754-compliant single-precision floating-point core library which now allows Xilinx's FPGAs to exceed the floating-point performance of the latest DSPs. Typical execution time for a 1024-point fast Fourier transform (FFT) is 10us. Real-time signal processing, transformation and optimisation are among application areas that will benefit from the new cores. Basic operations include full signed addition/subtraction, multiplication, division, square root plus float to integer and integer to float conversion, all with full exception handling and support for normalised and subnormal numbers.

2. Developers kit previews serial storage interfacing
Molex has played a lead role in designing and specifying the standard for connectors and cables that support the new Serial ATA 1.0 platform. Serial ATA, developed by the Serial ATA Working Group led by Intel, APT Technologies, Dell, IBM, Maxtor and Seagate, is the next generation storage interface intended to meet increased bandwidth and performance demands for PCs. Serial ATA is currently available in preproduction form (Serial ATA Developer's Kit) and may be requested by sending an email to seriala[-email removed-]om.

3. Chipset covers both wireless net standards
According to Synad Technologies, Mercury5G is the world's first complete dual-mode chipset, which makes it possible for the first time to build dual-standard wireless LANs. The Mercury5G chipset will enable a new breed of client interface products that can connect and interoperate with both the existing 11Mbit/s WiFi 802.11b networks operating at 2.4GHz and the emerging IEEE 802.11a 54Mbit/s networks operating at 5GHz.
