We do welcome your feedback on anything you may see in Electronicstalk… or for that matter your comments on anything relevant you may pick up elsewhere in the media. So with that in mind I make no appologies for handing over the bulk of this weeks platform to Sandie Shaples of Low Power Radio Solutions who appears to have spotted a technology that we may have missed.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
Best wishes

Sandie Sharples writes:
While the world waits patiently for Bluetooth, scientists and engineers at the University of Wichita USA have been quietly working on a revolutionary new communications system which if successful will see an end to the ever intrusive mobile phone.
The system, known as Cav-Com (or Newtooth) is carried literally within the body, the transmitter, and microphone being implanted within a cavity of the tooth or even denture. The receiver/speaker is sited within the middle ear cavity. A loop earring provides the antenna, which is indistinguishable from any other piece of ear jewellery. A system with built in antenna is available for those who are squeamish about body piercing.
The system remains in sleep mode until triggered by the simple action of grinding the teeth together. To initiate the communication simply say the number or name of the person you wish to contact. The tiny onboard computer interprets simple voice commands such as "store", "redial" etc. No batteries are needed; the power supply comes from electrical energy generated by the body's own movements.
The Cav-Com project is being sponsored by the Swedish telecom company Whale-Com. Whale-Com will manage the network when the system goes to market in 2002.
Dentists are already being commissioned and trained to maintain and service the transmitter device. The check can be done as an integral part of the normal dental check-up. Dentists will also be paid to advertise the system in the surgery along side bridges, crowns and fillings.
Evelyn Aull, an independent researcher has discovered that during tests student guinea pigs have encountered several "teething troubles". One student found he had accidentally locked himself in a chilling cabinet in the campus canteen. He was unable to phone for help using the Cav-Com as his severely chattering teeth caused the device to switch on and off continuously. When he was finally rescued he had attempted well over 3000 calls.
Another student swallowed his transmitter when it became imbedded in the toffee he was eating.
Probably the worst and most embarrassing story came from two students who claimed the device severely affected their sex life. Apparently at the crucial moment during intercourse, the un-named female student shouted "Paul Paul" causing the Cav-Com to dial up. Meanwhile the frustrated Paul was screaming, "Hang up Hang up". Both agreed the Cav-Com made a better contraceptive than a telecom device.
It is still a long way from the launch of the Cav-Com however work continues on the next version, which is claimed to be "thought" operated. Lets hope that Paul's anonymous girlfriend is actually thinking of Paul when she screams his name in the future!

9. Second-generation 1T-SRAM saves even more power
MoSys and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) have successfully implemented MoSys' second-generation 1T-SRAM technology optimised for very low-power mobile applications. The first generation 1T-SRAM technology has been successfully deployed in volume production of low-power consumer applications. Now the second-generation 1T-SRAM technology challenges even the data-retaining standby power capabilities of 6T SRAM, with standby current capabilities of just 10uA/Mbit or less when implemented in TSMC 0.13-micron logic processes.
