Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Ever a proponent of the "capital" charms of London as an exhibition venue, I had been looking forward to this year's Radio Solutions event with interest. Here was an exhibition and conference that had always enjoyed limited success in Birmingham making the big step to a new venue in London - the newly refurbished Commonwealth Conference and Exhibition Centre.

I now realise the folly of my pro-London stance and would like to take back everything I've ever said against Birmingham.

This is not to say that the new venue wasn't impressive. The conference and exhibition facilities are very fine indeed. (And I wasn't the only one to experience the odd nostalgic flashback to school trips of 30+ years ago.) But getting to the venue… aye there's the rub.

Whether you chose to drive (fighting the west London traffic and stumping up GBP 12 to park for a few hours), or public transport (which was at a standstill for most of the first morning), much time was wasted just getting there.

Compare and contrast with the experience getting to the NEC or Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham. Less time wasted travelling equates both to more time at the show and to a better frame of mind.

Failing that, of course, instead of visiting the show you could always read about it in Electronicstalk, and visit the vendors' websites rather than muck about with all that travelling.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Firmware development kit gets boots up and running

Wind River has announced the availability of visionWARE for the PowerPC, ARM and MIPS architectures, a firmware development kit that addresses one of the greatest challenges facing any software design team, namely booting code on custom hardware and peripherals. VisionWARE enables an incremental approach to building and debugging the initialisation software in a project. It uses a graphical user interface to select and pick relevant software elements to be configured (peripheral initialisations, diagnostics, basic system functions), generates the related code automatically and builds a "ready-to-boot" binary image for the target.

2. Processor brings wireless standards together

Bops has introduced its Mobile Wireless Processor (MWP) created in TSMC's 0.13-micron 1.2V process. The evaluation chip easily handles PHY processing for 802.11a, 802.11b and HiperLAN/2 PHY processing with no compromise in power compared to fixed function alternatives. Central to the MWP evaluation chip is Bops new low-power WirelessRay core, which is the first DSP core to compete head-on with single-mode wireless LAN fixed-function designs.

3. WindowsXPE ported to CompactPCI hardware

BVM has ported the WindowsXP Embedded operating system to its CompactPCI hardware. The cPC200 processor board with ACPI can run the WindowsXPE operating system in a CompactPCI chassis and can be swapped out live by use of the "hibernate" feature activated from the ejector handle switch. Similarly the cPC2PMC PMC module carrier series can also be swapped out of the CompactPCI system including the PMC modules on it, essential for high availability systems keeping downtime to a minimum.

4. Solution for testing dual-RAT handsets

Anite Telecoms has launched the industry's first dual-RAT (Radio Access Technology) handset test solution. The groundbreaking new dual-RAT capability sets a milestone for the wireless industry as it moves towards more complex next-generation handsets, networks and, thus, more complex test requirements. The new solution supports dual-RAT test-cases and enables such functions as the setting up of multitechnology calls.

5. Two-slot CompactPCI subsystem is only 1U high

Elma has developed what it claims is the world's smallest two-slot CompactPCI subsystem, combining hot-swap backplane, power supply, fans and disk-drive bay within a sturdy hot-dipped steel enclosure only 1U high. The system will accept two 6U x 80mm rear I/O boards in addition to the two 6U x 160mm front slots, and is available either with ears for rack mounting, or without ears for free-standing applications.

6. Four-channel DSO thinks it's a PC

Combining the acquisition power of a high-performance four-channel DSO with the flexibility and features of a PC, Gould reckons its Ultima 500 simplifies data handling by moving effortlessly from capture to report in one compact unit. A novel dual mode interface combines the look and feel of both a DSO and PC in a single integrated operating system.
