Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
More bad news for set-top box manufacturers this week came in the form of the admission that, in the UK at least, analogue TV just won't lie down. More to the point, the British Government appears to be pulling away from the idea of subsidising households to go digital.
The original plan had looked like manna from heaven for set-top box and digital TV businesses. On the basis that by 2004 around 70% of households would have paid for digital TV, the Government would then subsidise the remaining 30% to upgrade. The funds would then be recouped by selling off the old portion of the spectrum used for analogue TV transmissions.
With only 40% of households having made the switch (and no doubt many of these are "mixed-signal" households), the Government admits its original plan to discontinue analogue transmissions by 2006 looks a lot more like 2010 or even later.
So much for stimulating the market.

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Two decoders in one for double the set-top box
Philips Semiconductors says it has developed the world's first IC to embed two DVB-S/DSS channel decoders. The highly integrated TDA10093HT solution offers satellite broadcasters and set-top box and TV manufacturers significant system cost reductions, when compared with two conventional channel receivers. Targeted at next-generation satellite set-top boxes, the chip will enable a new class of feature-rich broadcast applications to be offered to consumers.
