Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
It's good to know I'm not alone in getting increasingly frustrated by slow Internet downloads. But, as reported in this column two weeks ago, and echoed by feedback from you, "e-rage" from slow and/or hanging downloads is a growing phenomenon.
According to a report from research company NOP Omnibus, almost two-thirds of adult web users experience stress while online. But the more worrying finding is that 75% of those who admitted to being frustrated said their most likely reaction to a slow or broken download was to give up and go for a drink.
It's not that I'm worried about alcoholism. (Let's face it, "drink" might equally apply to coffee or even chamomile tea.) The worry is that whether due to poor bandwidth or poor design, information is not reaching its target. And if that's the case, what's the point of the web?
We can all play our part in improving the situation.
First, stop sending huge unsolicited e-mails. There's nothing less likely to endear yourself to somebody than tying up their connection for 40 minutes, as one company did to me last week.
Secondly, think about the most bandwidth-efficient way of presenting your information. And if this means your web designer accuses you of living in the Stone Age, then so be it. I hate to disillusion the poets among you, but a picture (and in particular a badly compressed one) isn't worth a thousand words.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We have thousands of engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes
