Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Without broadband access, the Internet can become a frustrating thing for some. How often have you sat and waited for a website to load, only to give up once the boredom threshold arrived?

The fact is that the vast majority of users do not have broadband access, and are limited to the 56, 28.8 or even 14.4Kbit/s of dear old-fashioned modem technology.

This is something that we at Electronicstalk have always recognised, and we hope our readers appreciate the way that the site is designed with a low graphics overhead so that all pages should load quickly, even with a low-bandwidth Internet connection.

Sadly, not everyone appreciates this fact, and week-on-week we are receiving larger and larger files from companies informing us of their latest news, complete with pointless (if attractive) photography and other graphical images. And, not surprisingly, in many cases these are the same companies whose websites take so long to load that the boredom threshold kicks in, followed by the inevitable hit on the stop button.

So here's a little advice for your company's web designer. Unless you only really want to cater for the small percentage with broadband access, for goodness sake keep it simple!

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have thousands of engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes
