Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
It's funny how a technology can suddenly come into vogue, particularly when its proponents have perceived it as being under threat.
This phenomenon appears to be affecting the seemingly mature world of low-power radio, which as little as a year ago was still in a state of flux, wondering whether its tried and tested technology could compete with Bluetooth.
Following Microsoft's "snub" by delaying software support for Bluetooth, which amounted to a message of "get a move on" to manufacturers, recent weeks have seen a plethora of Bluetooth launches. And although the majority are distinctly "end-user-oriented" (or dare we say "big boys' toys"), we make no apologies for carrying news of them in Electronicstalk.
Meanwhile, back in the "old" world of low-power radio, markets are holding up remarkably well. So well, in fact, that some very big names are starting to take notice, and this week no lesser company than Texas Instruments has joined the fray (see below), no doubt eying the successes of Micrel in recent years.
Could it be that Bluetooth is starting to show its true colours? There certainly appears to be a greater perception of what the technology can and cannot do. And if this is having a beneficial knock-on effect on other technologies then so be it.
Those in search of an answer (and within spitting distance of London) could do worse than check out next month's Radio Solutions Exhibition and Conference (6th-7th November 2001 at the newly opened Commonwealth Conference & Events Centre). Further details are available from the Low Power Radio Association at www.lpra.org.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Transceiver chip is easy on the battery
Texas Instruments has entered the low-power radio market with a single-chip RF transceiver to meet the requirements of digitally modulated medium- and low-cost licence-free applications in the European 868-870MHz and US 902-928MHz ISM bands. The TRF6901 is a frequency shift keying and on-off keying transceiver that establishes frequency-programmable, half-duplex, bidirectional RF links in ISM-band applications. It is designed for low power consumption, operating down to 1.8V.
