Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
This was going to be the week when we all got excited about 3G mobile, wasn't it?
The world's first service began yesterday, and manufacturers worldwide should be ramping up for the anticipated demand this wondrous new technology could bring us. But with the proverbial whimper, Nokia, those eternal pragmatists, tempered the weeks good news with a forecast that the market for handsets would not mature until 2004. This of course has nothing to do with any desire to get the most out of 2.5G, does it?
Fortunately, news has reached this office of far greater portent. It appears that elsewhere in Denmark physicists have successfully completed an experiment in which two samples, each comprising trillions of atoms, were made to interact at a distance. The phenomenon is known as "quantum entanglement", and it could lead the way to superfast quantum communications systems and ways of teleporting objects by instantly transferring their properties from place to place.
Teleportation, eh? Who needs 3G mobile?
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. 3. Price breakthrough for mid-range scopes
Tektronix has announced a breakthrough series of mid-range oscilloscopes that it reckons sets a new price for performance benchmark in the industry. Mainstream products are quick to leverage the speed and functionality found in the latest innovations, and the measurement tools used for design and manufacturing must keep pace with these advancements. The new TDS5000 family of digital phosphor oscilloscopes (DPO) consists of three instruments that offer high-performance features at an unprecedented price to satisfy the needs of engineers designing electronic products.

4. Novel structure gives LEDs extra brightness
The MV8334T and MV8834T from Fairchild Semiconductor are ultra-bright T-1 3/4 (5mm) LED lamps that employ TS-AlInGaP (transparent substrate - aluminum indium gallium phosphide) technology to deliver significantly more light output than most LED devices in the marketplace today. Both the MV8334T and MV8834T offer superior performance in outdoor environments unmatched by LEDs using technologies such as GaAs, AlGaAs and AS-AlInGaP.

8. PWM chip powers Internet telephony
The ISL6401 pulsewidth modulator from Intersil is specifically designed to reduce the cost of generating talk and ring voltages for telephone and cable services using voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP) or digital subscriber line (DSL) technology. A single ISL6401 current-mode controller can generate enough power for up to 12 ringing subscriber line interface circuits (RSLICs) such as Intersil's ISL5586, saving cost and board space. Additionally, the ISL6401 can also be used as a standard boost controller or as a regulator for general DC/DC conversion of either positive or negative voltages.

9. Design for test method cuts ATE overheads
Mentor Graphics has developed a new patent-pending design-for-test (DFT) technology called Embedded Deterministic Test (EDT) that it reckons extends the capacity of automatic test equipment for a significant reduction in the cost of semiconductor testing, which can represent as much as 50% of manufacturing costs. Mentor's first EDT product, TestKompress, employs the new compression technology that allows semiconductor manufacturers to reduce the ATE memory and time requirements for testing ASIC, IC and SoC designs by up to 10 times.
