Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
There is little doubt that there are tough times ahead. Even the normally bullish Semiconductor Industry Association is predicting further declines in the market in the continuing aftermath of the events of 11th September.
However, one silver lining is the USA's removal of trade restrictions with India, imposed following the latter's nuclear tests during the 1990s. Although primarily aimed at the defence sector, the embargo has seriously hampered the country's electronics industry by denying it access to the latest generations of technology.
At a time when India's world-class software industry is being hit by a global telecomms slowdown, it is at least a crumb of comfort that it can start to progress in the hardware sphere.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have almost three thousand engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. PFT core processes video 20 times faster than DSP
RF Engines has created a new way of simultaneously processing digital signals across a wide spectrum in real time. Following the successful business models of ARM, MIPS and Parthus, RF Engines is making this innovative architecture available as licensable intellectual property in the form of IP cores that can be included in programmable logic devices or SoC designs. The technology enables a stack of digital frequency convertors or a massively parallel processed pipeline FFT to be replaced with a single chip, thereby reducing overall system cost and power consumption by up to 50%, while significantly improving performance.

2. DC/DC convertors keep their heads down onboard
C and D Technologies (NCL) claims its NKE series are the world's lowest profile 1W isolated DC/DC convertors. The single-output devices supplied in an ultraminiature DIP that combines an industry-standard pinout with a height of just 5.4mm and a board-mounted footprint of 9.8 x 11.5mm. Devices for 3, 5 and 12V inputs are available, while output options are 3.3, 5, 9, 12 and 15V.

4. DC and RF come together in a single ATE
New from Keithley Instruments is a single-insertion RF and DC parametric test solution for probing communications and high-speed digital wafer devices. When used with a suitable test structure layout, the Model S400DC/RF ATE system can execute DC and RF tests independently and in parallel, thereby greatly reducing the cost of test on today's advanced wafer processes. This system incorporates the vector network analyser (VNA) and DC/RF probe card technology, supports "lights out" factory automation, and is compatible with both 200 and 300mm probers.

6. Three-piece lead reconditioning system
Manufacturers and users of fine-pitch surface mount devices constantly face the challenge of reclaiming components with bent, misaligned or mangled leads. For many companies, automated lead processing systems are not a viable alternative, since their cost/benefit ratio is excessively high. PESL now offers a viable solution with a manually operated three-piece lead reconditioning system from Fancort, featuring the F-1B/1RC, Dana Design MLCS-2 and inspection kit.

9. Convertors are quiet enough for wireless
Designed for wireless appliances that demand low-noise performance, Texas Instruments claims its TPS6024x series are the industry's lowest noise switched-capacitor buck-boost convertors. Featuring 170uV RMS output voltage ripple (at 20Hz to 10MHz bandwidth), the devices are well suited to VCO (voltage controlled oscillator) and PLL (phase-lock loop) power supply applications in cellular phones, wireless personal digital assistants (PDAs), 802.11 PCMCIA cards, MP3 players, digital cameras, electronic games and SmartCard readers. By reducing power supply noise, the TPS6024x series of switched-cap convertors suppresses sideband interference and boosts channel locking, which improves overall transmission quality in wireless and RF applications.
