Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

There's an old (and very English) saying that today's news is tomorrow's fish and chip wrapper. And while current European hygiene regulations may bring its literal meaning into question, the spirit of the comment could never be more apt.

Two examples immediately come to mind: today's news that Intel considers the Pentium 4 to be old hat and only fit for laptops, and my own latest piece of home electronics gadgetry... a baby monitor based on DECT technology.

Both have something else in common: a reliance on battery technology which is still failing to keep pace with microelectronics technology. For while battery lives are increasing dramatically, the lion's share of this increase is due to the reduced power consumption of successive generations of components and systems.

DECT is a prime case in point. One of the biggest selling points of digitally enhanced cordless telephony has always been its power-saving features, allowing the use of smaller and lighter batteries, in turn allowing manufacturers to produce smaller and more stylish handsets... or even baby alarms.

What a shame, then, when the rechargeable battery in my son's new alarm fails to accept any charge! Ah well, at least it isn't using much mains power!

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Speedy dual DACs have the edge for wireless

Texas Instruments has a new family of 125Msample/s dual D/A convertors providing 10, 12 and 14bit resolution in pin-compatible packages which it claims feature exceptional dynamic performance for wireless communications. The high performance and low price of the DAC290x family make it attractive for any communications system using quadrature modulation such as cellular and paging basestations, point-to-point microwave systems, wireless local loop, wireless LANs, and cable modems. Additionally, the wide supply range (single +3.3V and/or +5V) and low power (310mW power dissipation) make the DAC290x family suitable for test instrumentation and battery-powered applications.

2. Complete Bluetooth bundle aids PC applications

CSR (Cambridge Silicon Radio) and WIDCOMM have announced the availability of a combined Bluetooth single-chip and software solution that allows PC OEMs to "one-stop-shop" when building Bluetooth into Windows-based desktops and notebooks. The agreement means that CSR can now offer to its customers a fully engineered hardware and software solution for PC applications that is prequalified to version 1.1 of the Bluetooth standard and includes full USB certification.

3. Router chip takes on plug n play networking

Virata has fully integrated the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) Internet Gateway Device specification for NAT traversal into its leading Integrated Software on Silicon (ISOS) platform, which has been deployed in over 7 million installations worldwide. As the only broadband semiconductor company to offer this support, Virata reckons it can provide its licensed customers with a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Incorporating UPnP into ISOS will allow any Virata-enabled gateway or router to be auto-detected by PCs running Windows Me and Windows XP.

4. Card integrates DC, RF and optical measurements

New from Keithley Instruments, the Model 7090 optical switching card enables optical, DC and RF switching all within one instrument. When used in Keithley's existing 7001/7002 switching platforms, the Model 7090 enables manufacturers of laser diodes and related optoelectronic devices to automate test applications more effectively.

5. BGA/fine-pitch rework and prototyping services

Crayford EMS specialist Texcel Technology has launched new BGA/fine-pitch rework and prototyping services, aimed at enabling these advanced space-saving technologies to be applied to smaller projects. For many companies, the costs and risks of adopting new manufacturing technology are hard to justify for smaller volumes, but by optimising its contract EMS facilities for small to medium sized batch operation, Texcel is able to provide a complete turnkey service from prototype design, through to batch production.

6. PCI board handles rapidly changing thermocouples

According to Adept Scientific, fast thermocouple temperature measurement is now easy, thanks to the completely plug-and-play PCI-DAS-TC from Measurement Computing (formerly ComputerBoards). The MCC PCI-DAS-TC has the speed capabilities to cope with rapid changes in temperature, with thermocouple temperature values produced at a 1kHz rate.

7. Audio amps have high PSU rejection for cellphones

New from National Semiconductor, the LM4894 and LM4895 Boomer audio amplifiers are optimised for the cellular phone market, and are said to have the best PSRR performance available in the industry. Improved PSRR (power supply rejection ratio) performance reduces the effect of noise on power supply lines being picked up and intensified by the audio amplifier. As a result, there is less noise to the earpiece speaker in cellular phone applications.

8. Silver-based coatings bring EMC to plastics

Two new electromagnetic shield coatings, specially formulated to meet EMI requirements, have been launched by Uxbridge based Trimite as part of its paints for plastics product group. Designated J190 and J191, both coatings have been specially designed to give excellent coverage and adhesion to most commonly used plastic substrates such as ABS, PVC, Noryl and various commercial blends.

9. Signal generator handles Bluetooth and GSM

IFR Systems has launched the wireless industry's first multisource signal generator capable of generating multiple Bluetooth and GSM carriers within one instrument. For critical Bluetooth interoperability testing, IFR claims the 2026B with Bluetooth Option 117 is more cost effective than buying two or three separate signal sources.
