Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

The excellent news that Concorde should be back in service before the end of next month brings to an end a most depressing chapter for the aerospace industry.

The timing of last year's Paris aircrash could not have been much worse, adding fuel to the nay-sayers who refused to see a continuing future for this flagship of Anglo- French co-operation. And at the same time, a significant number of European electronics manufacturers and systems houses were looking forward to a continuing programme of maintenance and upgrade.

On a personal note, it will be reassuring to hear the early-evening sonic boom as the great bird breaks the sound barrier en route to Washington. Or maybe I'm just looking forward to seeing her dip her wings over the Belfry when the European team vanquishes the USA to regain the Ryder Cup.

Almost makes me want to wave an EU flag!

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Novel comms processor gains development support

Chameleon Systems has begun shipping a complete development environment for the CS2112 Reconfigurable Communication Processor (RCP) - the company's flagship product announced in May 2000. The development environment, comprising Chameleon's C-SIDE software tool suite and CT2112SDM development kit, enables customers to develop and debug communication and signal processing systems running on the RCP. Chameleon has completed its development programme and is now shipping tools and development boards to its customers.

2. Hand-wound capacitors have ultralow ESR for audio

Developed in conjunction with several leading loudspeaker manufacturers, specialist capacitor manufacturer, ICW (Industrial Capacitors Wrexham) has released a range of capacitors specifically suited to audio applications. Entitled Claritycap, there are four ranges of metallised polypropylene film capacitors offering a wide range of capacitances and voltages, that are ideally used in crossover units within hi-fi speakers and studio monitors. There are three axial, 'wrap and end-seal' ranges - PW, PX and SA - and the new ASMFP disc-shaped capacitor.

3. Off-the-shelf macros put 1T-SRAM on SoC menu

MoSys has made available a family of standard 1T-SRAM memory macros using silicon-proven 0.25- and 0.18-micron cores. Through this extension to MoSys' current offering of custom-designed embedded memory products, customers now have the added convenience of off-the-shelf 1T-SRAM memory macros in common sizes and configurations for rapid integration into their products. Available in 1 and 2Mbit sizes and both high speed and low power configurations, customers can also select from different memory bus widths as well as read and write timing interfaces, delivering the high density advantages of custom 1T-SRAM macro design with the time-to-market advantages normally only possible for compiled macros.

4. Top specs for DSO workstation

Nicolet Instrument Technologies says its new Accura 100 combines the power of a high-resolution transient recorder, the display and control of an oscilloscope plus the capabilities of a Windows PC in a single system. The Accura 100 combines a 100Msample/s 12bit (0.025% resolution) digitising capability with ultra-low-noise amplifiers to provide a level of performance unmatched by any other DSO. Data integrity is assured thanks to an SFDR (spurious free dynamic range) of greater than 75dB over the 1MHz bandwidth. Programmable eighth-order Bessel filters remove aliases and extract signals from unwanted noise.

5. Fine-pitch connectors shift data more reliably

Honda has extended its 0.8mm-pitch HDRA family of high-quality high-density shielded interconnect solutions with a new version handling solid 28AWG, in a robust low-cost package. Ideal for compact applications such as notebook computers, RAID servers and four-port PCIbus systems, the cable-mounted connector can transmit high performance data quicker and more reliably. The HDRA E68M is a 68-contact 0.8mm-pitch IDC-type male connector for solid 28AWG cables, ideal for high-performance compact applications requiring cost-effective shielded connectors to ensure data integrity at high speeds.

7. Soft processors on show in Boston

Proceler is to launch its beta programme and demonstrate its novel capability to automatically generate application-specific soft processors from standard C code in the Wind River Partner Pavilion, booth 811, at the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) in Boston, 5th-7th September 2001. In September, Proceler will begin phase I of its beta programme, which will include a limited version of the Proceler development environment that will evaluate how well an embedded design can be accelerated in hardware. This evaluator product will analyse ANSI C code and produce a report that highlights code segments that can be accelerated in hardware, plus estimates of the performance characteristics and hardware resource usage for those accelerated code segments.
