Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
As a proponent of the potential commercial advantages to be gained from the "Green economy", I have to give top marks this week to Sanyo with its announcement of the world's first commercial soap-free washing machine.
The machine uses a combination of electrolysis and ultrasound to do its job; but possibly the most remarkable aspect is its price - just GBP 665 when it goes on sale later this year in Japan.
This may be bad news for detergent manufacturers, but it's potentially excellent news for aquatic environments worldwide which will be relieved of many millions of tons of pollutants. Just for once, the whales will be delighted with this Japanese initiative.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. MOSFET and controller combine for tiny switchers
International Rectifier has introduced a series of efficient, low-cost and rugged integrated switchers, which combine a HEXFET power MOSFET with the controller IC in a single package. The IRIS-Series integrated switchers simplify design and reduce PCB area and component count by 25% at the same or better efficiency than discrete-based circuits in AC/DC switched mode power supplies. The new devices are optimised for flyback topologies in universal- and single-input, 60 to 180W SMPSs.

2. PCI board houses power supply test system
Datel's model PCI-462 delivers a full 22W output, a precision programmable power D/A output and A/D input monitor, configured on a desktop PCI board. The multichannel isolated board is aimed at programmable linear test applications, custom PC-based ATE and software-controlled manufacturing test. The system is ideal for testing power supply rejection on development circuits.

3. Rotary solenoid for a quieter lifestyle
As office automation requires more machinery, noise as well as efficiency and output is increased. Closely monitored by the HSE, audible noise in the workplace is a matter of concern, which has prompted Densitron Control Systems to develop a low-noise rotary solenoid. Used in photocopiers, printers and other paper processing machinery, the solenoids have a specially designed cover made from a new laminate material, originally developed to reduce the noise within automotive environments.

4. Low-power DSP bristles with peripherals
Texas Instruments is sampling the power-efficient, peripheral-rich TMS320C5509, allowing designers of hand-held multimedia products to begin designing next generation products immediately. The C5509 DSP, the second member of the low-power TMS320C55x DSP generation, maintains code-compatibly with the industry leading TMS320C54x DSPs, and features a new architecture that delivers the power-efficient performance and dedicated onboard peripherals required for hand-held multimedia applications such as digital still cameras, personal video cameras, personal medical, identification, and security devices.

5. Memory card socket has integral ESD shield
The global market is growing rapidly for Flash memory and SDRAM removable memory cards, rather than board to board chips. In response to this Matsushita Electric Works has introduced the AXA2 socket designed to withstand insertion and removal in excess of 10,000 times, and featuring a soft "click" insertion mechanism. These sockets can be used for any application requiring an SD RAM card or multimedia card such as digital music players and cameras, PDAs, video cameras, cellular phones and other digital consumer electronics products.

6. Joints stay dry with sleeves and resin
New from CTL Components is a medium-voltage cable jointing kit that uses a combination of heatshrink technology and two-part polyurethane resin to provide complete protection against the ingress of moisture even in locations with a high water table. Known as Heatshrink+Resin, the new kit includes heatshrink tubing for insulating core conductors and also features a sealed two-part resin system that provides a clean, convenient and reliable method for mixing the resin compound.
