Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
It's good to be back - online that is. There's nothing like 11 days of isolation to make you realise just how reliant we have all become on a reliable telecomms network, particularly in an area where mobile reception is at best patchy.
Many thanks for all your messages of support. I will endeavour to answer all of them once we have returned the Electronicstalk site to its usual up-to-the-minute newsworthy status.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Reference design slashes cost of digital receivers
Driving the design costs of digital radios to mass-market levels, Texas Instruments and RadioScape have developed the industry's most cost-effective reference design for Eureka-147 digital audio broadcast (DAB) receivers. Priced at around GBP 30, the easy-to-build design enables manufacturers for the first time to offer next-generation radios at less than GBP 100 retail. Based on the TMS320DRE200 baseband announced in January, the reference design includes eight TI analogue components and is enhanced by RadioScape's software-defined radio expertise.

2. Fibre Bragg gratings increase channel capacity
Next-generation fibre-optic components and subsystems vendor, Southampton Photonics (SPI), has formally launched its BragNet family of fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs), claimed to be the most advanced of their type. By being optimised for group delay, as well as channel isolation, passband and channel spacing, they will enable global network equipment vendors to increase the number of channels (wavelengths) carried by a single fibre-optic cable while at the same time expanding per-channel bandwidth.

3. Emissions test packages for in-house compliance
Available now from Schaffner EMC, Emipak Plus is a range of cost-effective EMC emissions compliance packages which form an ideal platform for companies considering in-house EMC testing. The packages address the growing demand from electrical and electronics OEMs to reduce the time and costs associated with continued compliance with international EMC regulations by reducing the need for third-party compliance testing. So, for example, manufacturers can perform their own in-house production sample testing to verify continued compliance as well as providing evidence for self-certification of new products which involve only minor modifications to existing compliant equipment.

4. CompactFlash card stores half a CD's worth of data
SMART Modular Technologies has expanded its Flash product line to include a new 320Mbyte Type I ATA CompactFlash (CF) card as the first product within its new high performance ATA storage family. SMART's CompactFlash is designed for data and code storage applications and offers clear benefits in density, performance and connectivity over similar CF solutions. SMART's CompactFlash uses up to five 512Mbit Flash chips to achieve densities up to 320Mbyte (half the storage capacity of a CD-ROM), enabling the lowest-cost CF card solution for this capacity at this time.

6. Modular CompactPCI enclosure takes up to eight
BVM has released the cPC1000, a modular CompactPCI enclosure, available in many different user-defined configurations. Its vertical format and light weight make it particularly suitable for portable applications such as test systems. Fully hot-swap compliant to Rev3.0, the cPC1000 is fitted with a four-slot backplane and a choice of floppy, hard disc or CD ROM drives; alternatively it is available with any width of backplane up to a full eight slots if mass storage is not required.

7. Half-size fibre connection system
Radiall has a new range of fibre-optic connectors, cables and assemblies specifically designed for telecomms and datacomms applications. Called the LC Series, the new single and multimode connector products are designed for high-density applications where space is a key consideration as, according to Radiall, they are half the size of currently available standard fibre-optic connectors.

8. Rework system provides even heating
The Sniper-WB, available from Kaisertech, has been developed to rework PCBs as small as 51 x 51mm right up to 508 x 610mm, and even larger boards can be accommodated by special request. The unit provides the careful under-board heating necessary to prevent warping on larger boards and larger SMT components. A high-energy, 306 x 306mm 3600W panel heater and a 1200W reflow heater ensure that the entire PCB is stabilised and warping is avoided.

9. Modules ease FPGA-based digital signal processing
Building on the recent addition of FPGA modules to the popular Hunt Engineering Heron range for modular DSP, the Heron-FPGA3 and Heron-IO2 modules use Virtex II FPGAs from Xilinx. Heron-FPGA3V has a Virtex II with 1 million gates, together with 90 digital I/O and serial options. Heron-IO2V has a Virtex II with 1 million gates plus two channels of 105Msample/s 12bit A/D and two channels of 125Msample/s 14bit D/A.

The new Back-UPS ES 350 and Back-UPS ES 500 from American Power Conversion (APC) provide continuous power and hardware protection for desktops and peripherals, incorporate country-specific outlets and offer a range of standard features normally found on more expensive units aimed at office environments. These include file saving, auto-shutdown software as well as telephone/fax/modem and DSL line surge protection to stop all 'back-door' surges.
