Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

This week's issue of the Electronicstalk Newsletter is being brought to you thanks to a novel exercise in partially wireless networking.

The location of the Electronicstalk Editorial office is, of course, a closely guarded secret. But let's just say that last week's electrical storms in the West of England came very close to levelling the whole building.

Fortunately, thanks to that wonderful Victorian practice of installing what amounts to a huge busbar on any high structure, the storm's worst excesses were safely conducted to earth. The same could not be said of the pole-mounted BT line distribution unit some 50 metres away. Suffice it to say that the pole remains, but the remains of the distribution unit are scattered far and wide.

BT's recent financial problems have been widely debated in the media. But the company's shortage of resources only really hits home when one spends (so far) six days without a telephone line.

All of which brings me back to that partially wireless networking, as I fear it's time for me to pick up my desktop PC, drive to a friend's house some 4km distant (the wireless link), and use his (still working) telephone line to mail this off. Who'd have thought a Ford Mondeo could have such a high-tech role!

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. The future's Indigo for 5GHz wireless LANs

Intersil has announced the industry's first complete chipset to deliver 54Mbit/s datarates for higher speed, broadband wireless connectivity for business and home networking. Intersil expects its new PRISM Indigo 5GHz chipset, designed to conform to the latest IEEE 802.11a standard for 54Mbit/s operation at 5GHz, to significantly boost growth in the networking market by complementing existing 2.4GHz WLAN systems and opening up many new applications including multimedia and video conferencing. PRISM Indigo can also operate in parallel with existing 2.4GHz IEEE 802.11b-based WLANs with no interference.

2. Free software combines scope, FFT and strip-chart

Data Translation has added Scope 2.0 to its free Omni CD for data acquisition. The free software, which is also available for download, presents a multichannel oscilloscope together with real-time FFT and a 16-channel strip-chart, all within an easy to use graphical user interface. Scope 2.0 was designed to resemble conventional measurement instruments, rather than a drag and drop Windows approach, in accordance with conventional oscilloscopes and strip-chart recorders.

3. IP core enables 2.5Gbit/s serial links

Cypress Semiconductor has brought its Programmable Serial Interface (PSI) family of programmable PHY devices into the InfiniBand marketplace with the introduction of an InfiniBand IP core. The core can be implemented in the company's CYP25G01K100 PSI device, the world's only 2.5Gbit/s programmable PHY and one of the recently delivered devices in Cypress's family of programmable PHYs. The InfiniPHY IP core is a point-to-point, integrated communications solution that enables the transfer of data over high-speed serial links.

4. Even more functions in popular PCB layout package

According to Adept Scientific, the latest release of the Ultiboard PCB layout software from Electronics Workbench gives unprecedented functionality at unmatched prices. Ultiboard 2001 has been specifically redesigned after an extensive R and D programme in response to user feedback, to deliver the first truly innovative layout software in years. Over 40,000 engineers already use Ultiboard. Adept reckons Ultiboard 2001 is the most advanced layout tool available in the industry, delivering functionality simply not available from other suppliers, at very attractive prices.

10. Microscope views ESD-sensitive components

A special version of the new Olympus BX2M series of microscopes for materials microscopy has been introduced to allow the safe examination of ESD-sensitive samples. Many electronics components can be damaged by the build up of potential and subsequent sparking. When studying such components under a microscope, it is therefore necessary to eliminate any possible electrostatic charge from the operator and from surrounding air. By making all operational elements of the frame conductive, the new BX41M-ESD microscope simply eliminates any electrostatic build-up of charge.
