Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
An enforced stay in hospital last week confirmed a number of prejudices. First, regardless of highly-paid consultants' attempts to improve it, hospital food remains bland at best. And, secondly, EMC is still a misunderstood discipline.
The hospital of my incarceration is a modern unit, indeed it is the flagship of the region, and is bristling with every piece of modern medical technology available to the UK National Health Service. However, the whole building is adorned with hastily prepared photocopied signs entreating all residents and visitors to refrain from using their mobile telephones as they may interfere with sensitive medical equipment.
So great was the hospital's concern, that the cordless telephones allocated to each ward for patient use had also been withdrawn from service on the same grounds.
Logically, one can draw only one conclusion: the hospital authorities are not confident in the immunity of their (CE Marked) equipment to the fields produced by GSM telephones. This is slightly odd, as they haven't bothered to remove the local basestations, nor have they asked the neighbouring international airport to turn off their radar.
Then again, they may just be keen to generate extra revenue from their payphones. Who can tell?
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. 64bit soft core has integral floating-point unit
In response to customer demand for a 64bit synthesisable processor core with floating point to improve performance throughput in next-generation consumer products, MIPS Technologies has introduced the MIPS64 5Kf core. LSI Logic, Atmel and Texas Instruments have already taken licenses for the new 5Kf core, which is the latest addition to MIPS Technologies' family of high-performance, 64bit synthesisable cores. It is the industry's only licensable, synthesisable 64bit core with an integrated floating-point unit (FPU).

2. Convertors deliver 60W from quarter-brick outline
Artesyn Technologies has a new series of dual-output DC/DC convertors that provide up to 60W from an industry-standard quarter-brick package. The new EXQ60 series of convertors feature a wide input voltage range of 33 to 75V DC, and are available with 5/3.3 or 3.3/2.5V outputs. Both models employ a novel form of open frame construction, measure just 2.3 x 1.5 x 0.5in, and offer exceptionally high output current capabilities - the 5/3.3V model can deliver up to 12/15A, respectively.

8. New package stars in shrinking logic moves
Texas Instruments claims its new NanoStar packaging saves as much as 70% of the space required for existing SC-70 (DCK) logic packages, providing a big advantage for portable consumer electronic devices. The first devices available in NanoStar packaging will offer the most popular logic functions for space-constrained systems such as wireless handsets, pagers, personal digital assistants, portable DVD players, MP3 players, notebook computers and other portable consumer electronics. NanoStar packaging will be first introduced in a 5-pin single-gate low-voltage CMOS (LVC) technology. LVC dual-gate devices will follow in an 8-pin version. These logic devices operate at 1.8V, and are optimised at 3.3V, providing low power consumption and medium current drive capability.

10. PCI core migrates FPGA designs painlessly
Designers using high-density, advanced FPGAs with embedded PCI cores to design network routers, servers, multiprocessor computation engines and EDP applications such as printers and peripherals can now cost-effectively and easily transition to an ASIC for volume production. The key is a new 64bit/66MHz drop-in replacement PCI core from AMI Semiconductor (AMIS). The AMIS 64bit/66MHz PCI core delivers all the performance and features of a Xilinx Virtex FPGA PCI core, which is the most popular prototype device for developing platforms with high data-transfer rates. Its drop-in design eliminates any rewiring or modifications at the time the design is converted from an FPGA to an ASIC.
