Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

It was not so many weeks ago that I used this column to praise the Climate Change Levy as a means for encouraging improved industrial efficiency. What's more, i even predicted that the British Government's associated Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme to encourage the adoption of this more efficient technology would actually prove that "Green" issues could stimulate industry.

Well, the fervour may have dissipated a little, but I am delighted to reveal that the list of equipment qualifying for the ECA scheme has finally been published on the web at www.eca.gov.uk. (Ah well, if it had been published on its due date of the 1st April, nobody would have believed it, would they?)

Now, that same Government has launched its highly laudable Envirowise waste reduction programme. And while it is neither the role or indeed the right of this column to make any form of political comment in the run up to an election, the concept of any government seeking to advise the rest of us on how to minimise waste is delightfully ironic.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Low-power DSP cores deliver 100MIPS/mW

Bops has released a range of low-power-consumption DSP cores designed to extend battery life without giving up the high performance required by the next-generation of mobile devices. "The problem system designers of mobile broadband wireless devices have to deal with today is the trade-off required between power and performance: higher performance typically requires more power", explained Mark Bowles, president and COO, Bops. "Bops newest cores solve this problem by delivering 100MIPS/mW or more than five times the performance of existing low-power DSP chips. Ours is the disruptive technology needed to break the chokepoints that exist today in getting broadband data and high-quality video onto cell phones, PDAs and handheld personal computers".

2. Bellows-type contacts resist mating stresses

The P5KF narrow-pitch connector from Matsushita Electric Works features a novel bellows-type twin-contact structure that resists mating stresses and offers high contact reliability. This, combined with its compact dimensions, makes it wholly suited for use in cellular phones, test equipment and portable data terminals. In its smallest guise, the P5KF has a profile of just 1.5mm enabling two PCBs to be connected together in the most space efficient manner.

3. Integrated set for digital design and development

Tektronix has announced an automated instrumentation solution that seamlessly combines many of the company's proven logic analyser and oscilloscope models, creating an integrated toolset for digital development and troubleshooting. Obtaining a clear signal is a significant challenge for electronic designers working on digital systems because the complexity of these designs can degrade signal quality. The Tektronix iView package makes it possible to routinely view time-correlated waveforms from oscilloscopes with bandwidths up to 4GHz on the logic analyser display, enabling engineers to quickly track down elusive signal integrity problems in their designs.

Phazer from Gould Nicolet Technologies is a high-performance, 2-4 channel dynamic analyser that weighs only 8oz. The latest in a series of dynamic signal analyser products, the ultra-portable Phazer makes any USB equipped computer an instrument-quality, real-time analyser. Designed to address applications such as noise and vibration, modal and acoustic analysis, servo systems and more, Phazer offers unsurpassed performance in spite of its diminutive size. Featuring instrument quality, 18bit analogue to digital convertors per channel, Phazer offers a typical dynamic range of 110dB on all channels.

5. Snap-lock system secures circular connectors

A new 16mm, waterproof, circular connector from Binder incorporates a unique snap-lock method that provides fast, convenient and safe connect and disconnect. Now available exclusively in the UK from Quiller Electronics, the Binder 720 series has no screw fitting or push-pull collar as used in conventional circular connectors but instead has a simple snap lock fitting that provides a high level of connect integrity. This method ensures simple and fast connect and disconnect and is ideal for applications where quick system set up is required even in outdoor environments where gloves have to be used.

9. Free advice on waste minimisation

The British Government's Envirowise Programme is offering a free service to companies employing less than 250 employees. Confidential "fast track visits" are on-site reviews of waste by independent experts in waste minimisation. These consultants are committed to helping companies convert turnover into profit. Why buy expensive raw materials, store them, work on them and then throw them away. It costs money to pay someone to remove them, pay for landfill and then pay tax on this privilege.

10. First fully qualified Bluetooth module

Taiyo Yuden claims its Bluetooth module is the first full module in the world to earn certification for compliance with the requirements of Bluetooth Specification Version 1.1. The company has certified two variations of its Class 2 module, one with a USB interface and one with a UART interface. Taiyo Yuden is currently working towards certification of its Class 1 (20dBm) module, which will bring the company even closer to its goal of becoming the world's supplier of the de facto standard of Bluetooth module. Taiyo Yuden has geared up its manufacturing facilities to begin mass production of the certified module this June, and plans to produce one million Bluetooth modules per month by the end of 2001.
