Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Some people, it seems, just can't see the silver lining for the cloud. While the majority of the industrialised world has been addressing the need to reduce greenhouse emissions, George W Bush has decided that it is not in the USA's interest to comply with the aims of the Kyoto summit.
Perhaps he should have read last week's Electronicstalk Newsletter. There are plenty of companies in the UK that see the Climate Change Levy as a business opportunity to manufacture and sell energy-efficient products... not as a threat.
Mind you, this is not to say that all Green measures are necessarily positive. News has reached this office that the development of a major European technology park has been put on hold as the site chosen is thought to be the breeding ground for an endangered rodent species. So endangered is the furry creature concerned that it has not been seen on the site in years - perhaps a case of locking the proverbial stable door after the horse has bolted.
Meanwhile, this week sees the industry's longest-running bunfight: Nepcon at the NEC. Electronicstalk will be at the show, ferreting out all that's new in electronics manufacturing. Look out for highlights in next week's newsletter.
I hope you find this week's issue useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. All-in-one low-noise stepper motor driver IC
Toshiba has introduced a high-precision motor driver IC that uses BiCD semiconductor technology to integrate bipolar and CMOS devices with high-voltage double-diffused MOS (DMOS) power MOSFETs in a single chip. The new TB62209 motor driver IC is designed to simplify the implementation of low-noise stepping motor control designs in industrial applications and office equipment such as printers and fax machines. The TB62209F stepping motor driver IC uses Toshiba's BiCD process to integrate motor control with high-voltage power MOSFETs. These MOSFETs have a maximum voltage rating of 40V and an on resistance that, at just 0.5ohm, delivers power consumption up to three times less than traditional bipolar motor drive Ics.

2. Low-overhead TCP/IP stack for embedded Internet
Available now from Computer Solutions, CMX-MicroNet is a TCP/IP stack for the 8/16bit embedded market. Produced by CMX Systems, MicroNet is the first commercial offering to provide true TCP/IP capabilities that can be implemented for any 8 or 16bit micro. MicroNet allows TCP/IP and other protocols to be run directly on small processors. No proprietary protocols, gateways, or additional hardware are required.

3. FFT signal analyser with 100kHz bandwidth
The SR760 signal analyser, now available in the UK from TTi (Thurlby Thandar Instruments), is an FFT spectrum analyser with a dynamic range of 90dB and a real-time bandwidth of 100kHz. The speed and dynamic range of this instrument, coupled with its flexibility and many analysis modes, make it the ideal choice for a variety of applications including acoustics, vibration noise measurement and general electronics use. The true dynamic range of 90dB means that for a full-scale input signal the instrument has no spurious responses larger than -90dBc (one part in 30,000). Even signals as small as -114dBc (one part in 500,000) may be observed by using averaging.

4. X marks the spot for short-leadtime convertors
New from Lambda, the UK-manufactured X Series of DC/DC convertors is available with leadtimes as short as four weeks. Initially, 10 and 15W X Series models are available. Both come in an industry standard low-profile 10.2 x 25.4 x 50.8mm plastic case which has the double-sided PCB encapsulated within. The convertors operate over a wide 18-36 or 36-75V DC input range.

5. Wiring design bridges to the mechanical domain
Innoveda has released TransBridge, a wiring topology interface between the company's TransDesign tool suite for electrical system design and SDRC's I-DEAS mechanical design automation software. With TransBridge, users can concurrently design electrical distribution systems in the TransDesign electrical design domain and in the I-DEAS mechanical domain. This interface provides a time- and cost-effective means of generating a complete electrical design, and eliminates the need for manual verification previously required in the engineering process. By synchronising a TransDesign electrical design with 3D packaging and cable routing information in I-DEAS, TransBridge provides users with simultaneous 3D packaging verification and full electrical connectivity verification in the TransDesign environment.
