Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
This week sees the introduction of the Climate Change Levy, heralded in the UK by the Chancellor as essential towards the goal of cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 20 per cent. Considering that the levy will add 15% to the cost of almost all commercial and industrial energy, there has been very little fuss in the media; which is a pity.
Not that I'm advocating civil unrest to protest against such a reasonable measure. Rather, that we should have been singing its praises from the rooftops.
Even without the Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme, the nett effect of the Levy will be positive in encouraging investment in newer more-energy-efficient equipment. And in those areas where the scheme does apply, manufacturers should have a field day.
Here, surely was a case where the spin doctors should have been paving the way much longer in advance. More than one manufacturer of energy-saving equipment has admitted to me he didn't get his act together as fast as he would have liked, basically due to lack of publicity.
But despite this, the Levy is to be applauded: a Green measure that encourages industry? More of the same please.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. QuadPort RAM has bandwidth for comms
Cypress Semiconductor has announced the availability of production volumes of its 1Mbit QuadPort RAM, the next-generation, bandwidth-optimised family of synchronous memories designed for WAN and SAN markets. The family was developed in conjunction with EMC, the world's leading provider of information storage infrastructure systems, for a new storage application. The QuadPort RAM's four completely independent ports can simultaneously access its 1Mbit (64K x 18bit) memory array and operate in different frequency domains.

2. Functional checker intercepts SoC bugs early
BlackTie functional checker from Verplex Systems is the industry's first full-chip multi-million-gate-capacity tool to accelerate the verification of SoC designs. BlackTie provides exhaustive verification early in the design cycle to find as many RTL problems as possible - as bugs are easier to fix upstream. Users can formally check event or assertion monitors in their designs to find deeply embedded bugs, where integration-level test vectors may have little control or may not be sufficiently long enough to propagate errors to an observable output. Despite its thoroughness, BlackTie still manages to achieve high speed and capacity. In a recent customer engagement it verified over 300,000 functional properties of a 2.7 million gate design in slightly over 20min using a standard Unix workstation.

3. Program makes better use of IP in FPGAs
Mentor Graphics and Xilinx have released FPGA OpenMORE, a reference assessment program and spreadsheet for evaluating the reusability of IP in large, multi-million-gate FPGA designs. After six months of beta testing, the FPGA OpenMORE program is now available to the semiconductor design community with endorsements from trial users such as CAST and Telecom Italia Lab. The FPGA OpenMORE program is available for download at http://www.openmore.com.

4. Axial DC hot spot coolers for focused airflow
The 60mm range of ADDA axial DC hot spot coolers from Fan Technology is now available in 10, 15, 20 and 25mm frame sizes, supply voltages of 5, 12 and 24V and four different speed variants. The range provides high levels of design flexibility for cooling hot spots within enclosures and other applications where high cooling performance is required in confined spaces. Thanks to the use of the latest motor technology, the motor of the ADDA 60mm series occupies a small area of the fan cross-section so allowing a larger impeller and increased airflow.

5. DRAM proves to be logical in SoC designs
Atmos has announced immediate availability of its system-on-a-chip (SoC) pure logic IP core, SoC-RAM PL. The SoC-RAM PL core permits system-on-a-chip designers to embed large instances of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) in semiconductors using standard CMOS logic processes instead of expensive specialised merged logic processes. Target applications for the Atmos SoC-RAM core include ADSL and cable modems, digital camcorders, printers, PC graphics cards, routers and Gigabit Ethernet switching systems.

6. Flexible flat cable with a range of terminations
Hitaltech has a novel range of flexible flat cable (FFC) combined with round pin terminations achieved by flattening the round, solid copper conductors with a smooth transition from flat to round. This gives a very flexible cable which is highly resistant to vibration, bending and acts as a vibration damper. The fully automated production line is able to manufacture a flat flexible solution for PCB/PCB connection, a PCB to component or an entire cable harness.

7. Monitoring system reduces solvent waste
Kerry Ultrasonics has developed an automatic monitoring system which allows users of its cleaning machines to check the rate at which costly solvents are used during processing. The first of its kind to be offered by any manufacturer, this new facility was recently used to confirm a total consumption of just 2.4 litres during a seven-day test of a high-capacity cleaning machine. As well as demonstrating the solvent retention abilities of Kerry equipment, the monitoring system helps to minimise running costs because occasional increases in usage rate can be quickly spotted and rectified.

8. Rugged commercial enclosures cut costs
Mektron Systems has launched a range of compact, powered COTS rugged system enclosures designed for VME applications and offering outstanding quality and versatility. In particular, these enclosures provide substantial cost savings over traditional full MIL-spec enclosures without having to compromise quality or performance. They are ideally suited for the deployment of commercial or industrial grade hardware in hostile environments.

9. Tape sticks sinks without fasteners
The latest thermally conductive adhesive tape from Chomerics can significantly simplify PCB assembly by eliminating thermal grease and mechanical fasteners when bonding heatsinks to microprocessors and other heat-generating semiconductors. Suitable for bonding heatsinks to any plastic component package including those with non-flat surfaces, Thermattach T411 double-sided silicone adhesive tape combines a high bond strength, pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) with an expanded aluminium mesh carrier layer.
