Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Doom and gloom is all around. Tech stocks aren't performing, and markets around the globe are getting jittery (or so a dealer friend of mine told me yesterday). But will this affect our day-to-day working lives? And should we worry about it?

At the risk of sounding blasé, the only sane answers are "possibly" and "probably not". Let's face it, we work in a highly buoyant industry which can only move in one direction. The fact that headline news glories in the slightest blip in the Nasdaq, heralding the greatest recession since... er well, last Thursday really isn't worth the proverbial hill of beans.

I apologise if your stock options don't turn out to be the quick buck you had hoped. But how about doing something radical and taking a long-term view?

While multinationals may relocate certain operations, others will follow in their footsteps to fill the void. So lets just be happy that we work in a sustainable industry. My next door neighbour is a livestock farmer, and this week saw foot and mouth move within 20 miles.

On a brighter note, I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Most integrated GSM RF transceiver so far

Hitachi has launched its most integrated GSM RF transceiver solution to date. The HD155141F or 'B4' uses patented direct conversion technology and is compatible with all leading baseband devices. It significantly reduces overall system size and cost. The receiver incorporates a flexible, configurable analogue IQ interface and a fully integrated and fully automated DC offset cancellation circuit. These enable baseband compatibility without the need for special hardware or complicated DSP algorithms.

2. Tester gets the measure of wireless basestations

Tektronix has developed a new compact, modular instrument designed to simplify routine field installation and maintenance measurement tasks in wireless networks. The Tektronix NetTek basestation field tool enables installation and maintenance technicians to quickly and reliably verify basestation functionality, even under adverse field conditions. Designed as a basestation "toolkit", the new NetTek tool serves the purpose of multiple instruments.

5. MIPS at the core of advanced smart cards

New from MIPS Technologies, the MIPS32 4KSc smart card core is a high-performance, synthesisable embedded 32bit processor core for ultra-low-power advanced smart card applications. The processor core is implemented using the new SmartMIPS architecture that is designed to become the industry standard for next-generation smart card chips. The introduction of the MIPS32 4KSc smart card core follows the July 2000 announcement by MIPS Technologies and Gemplus to create an architectural standard for next-generation smart card chips.

6. A king amongst uninterruptible power supplies

A new addition to the latest Amplicon catalogue, the King UPS series is a low-cost, high specification range of uninterruptible power supplies. A major feature of the series is the regulated output voltage which is provided within +/-25% of the input voltage, and if for any reason this is exceeded the battery supplies the output voltage. A battery capacity of up to 7Ah is available, and is able to filter any spikes from the supply if necessary. Batteries provided are both hot swappable and user replaceable. Parallel operation is available for larger loads.
