Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Hype is a funny thing. Supposedly generated by spin doctors, and proliferated by the media, the "correct" level of hype can determine the success or failure of any new technology.
Timing is important, too. Nobody would dream of introducing something like a new processor architecture straight to the market with silicon available immediately. Designers need a chance to assess the architecture, and indeed to start working with it, before there is any need for high volumes of "real" products.
Which brings me to Bluetooth... which is in grave danger of becoming the most over-hyped concept of all time. And I warn you it will get worse: all we've seen so far is the campaign to gain acceptance within our own industry. The next stage which has to follow is to make Bluetooth-enabled communications the next "big thing" for the end user.
Certainly, the rest of the low-power radio community wishes the whole thing was a fait accomplis... that the long heralded $5 Bluetooth chipset was here already, and that it could take its place as just one of the technologies available for local datacommunications, alongside traditional short-range devices, DECT and full- blown spread spectrum, to name but three alternatives.
Electronicstalk will continue to keep you abreast of the latest developments in Bluetooth technology, such as Anritsu's new tester, featured below. But forgive us if we don't hold our collective breaths waiting to pen the "five dollar Bluetooth" headline. It could be some time yet.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Bluetooth tester runs the lot in 10 seconds
Anritsu has introduced the MT8850A tester to offer manufacturers of Bluetooth modules comprehensive, one-button testing traceable to national standards. It has been both designed and built at Anritsu's Stevenage plant. Industry forecasts predict that hundreds of millions of Bluetooth products will be sold annually as soon as 2003. The success of the standard will depend on users of the technology enjoying reliable, high-quality connections, "out of the box". Reliable testing will be one of the keys to achieving this but, because the target price for adding a Bluetooth interface to a product is under $5, cost of test will have to be kept correspondingly low.

2. ARC emulators use JTAG to cut external hardware
Available from ARC Cores are the first JTAG emulators for a configurable processor that provide powerful development and test capabilities normally only provided by bulky and expensive external hardware. The two new emulators from Corelis make use of ARC's unique on-chip debug capabilities to provide features that support any processor clock speed at which the target system runs, and are capable of supporting future processors from ARC. The new ScanICE-ARC and the NetICE-ARC emulators from Corelis use the standard JTAG port on ARC's Tangent processor to provide access to its on-chip debug facilities.

3. Miniature coax connector offers 4GHz performance
The Mini Coax+ from Harting is a miniature coaxial multipole connector designed to provide high-integrity signal transmission between backplanes and daughter boards at frequencies up to 4GHz. The new device is particularly suited to the requirements of basestations for third-generation mobile communications systems, where robustness and reliability as well as performance are essential.

4. Three-port PCI/PCI bridge aids system integration
Now available from GD Technik is the Pericom PI7C7100, the industry's first triple-port PCI/PCI bridge device designed to be fully compliant with the 32bit, 66MHz implementation of the PCI Local Bus Specification Revision 2.1. Employing a circular-delta bus architecture, the new PCI/PCI bridge features a 32bit primary and two 32bit secondary ports.

5. 1kV rad-hard power MOSFET saves satellite space
International Rectifier has introduced the world's first 1000V radiation-hardened (rad-hard) power MOSFET. The IRHY7G30SE rad-hard power MOSFET improves power management circuits and high-frequency switching systems in satellite communications systems by minimising component count. The new 1000V device is a major breakthrough, as the highest voltage-rated rad-hard MOSFET previously available was a 600V device.
