Red Bend's Mobile Handset Update solution has been integrated with Digital Airways' man-machine interface engine for mass-market mobile phones.

Mobile software specialists Red Bend and Digital Airways have partnered to integrate Red Bend's Mobile Handset Update solution with Digital Airways' man-machine interface (MMI) engine for mass-market mobile phones The integration of these two technologies enables handset manufacturers to create mass-market mobile phones that can be customised easily and securely, both before manufacture and afterwards over the air (OTA)

Kaleido is a complete solution for handset manufacturers to create sophisticated man-machine interfaces quickly and easily.

Unlike other existing MMI approaches, Kaleido separates the MMI specification from its implementation.

The MMI is fully specified with a configurable file, which is read and duly rendered by the MMI engine implemented on the handset.

As a result, manufacturers dramatically reduce the cost and time to market of MMI design and implementation, while gaining complete flexibility to produce customised phones.

The solution will be demonstrated at the upcoming 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona.

Red Bend's technology enables mobile phone manufacturers, operators and mobile application developers to create and manage software and firmware updates for mobile phone handsets and to deploy and install the updates over-the-air.

BenQ-Siemens, LG Electronics, Sharp, Sony Ericsson, and other large handset manufacturers use Red Bend's vCurrent Mobile FOTA solution to quickly, cost effectively and reliably deliver compact firmware updates to mobile phones already in the hands of users.

The integration of Red Bend's vCurrent technology with Kaleido extends the reach of the solution to the user interface.

Portions of the MMI can now selectively be downloaded and updated, hence allowing for partial or even complete reconfiguration of the user experience.

The reconfiguration can apply to the presentation itself, but also to the business logic, allowing the dynamic addition of new functions.

For instance, mobile operators can allow the user add services that can be useful in specific contexts: interactive map of a city, customised weather forecasts, user-generated content etc.

According to Philippe Silberzahn, CEO of Digital Airways: "Dynamic, OTA update of the handset MMI is key to new revenue-generating services with 3G, but has so far been hampered by technical challenges".

"Digital Airways and Red Bend not only make it possible, but also simple and secure".

The integrated solution allows manufacturers to address the challenge of creating handsets that are both generic and deeply customisable.

It also enables operators to create a new user experience based on user-generated content and user-centric needs.

"Red Bend is eager to see our update technology used for compelling mobile applications", said Morten Grauballe, Red Bend executive vice president for Marketing.

"Rapid and reliable over the air updating of Digital Airways' 3G user interface engine has the potential to deliver great value to users of mass market mobile phones".

The joint product will be demonstrated at the upcoming 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona on Digital Airways' and Red Bend's respective hospitality suites.
