Display Solutions has been chosen by Motorola's Networks and Enterprise Business to manage the development of the first ever PDA to operate on TETRA (terrestrial trunked radio) networks, targeted at public safety, utility and transport customers. The PDA has been developed to meet the needs of organisations that require secure access to real-time information on the move. This compact highly featured TETRA PDA is made possible by the use of Motorola's TOM100 embedded TETRA modem measuring just 47 x 47.5mm.
Prior to contract award, Display Solutions worked with the product development team at Motorola's facility in Basingstoke, supporting the specification, conceptual development and rapid prototyping of the PDA.
Display Solutions is now fully engaged in the project and actively managing UK and Far Eastern suppliers during the design, prototyping, validation and delivery phases of the project, which has short development timescales.
Motorola plans to take delivery of volume production units in Q3 2006.
The semicustom designed device is ruggedised to meet the reliability needs of target users.
The PDA offers a host of features not always found in commercial PDAs including 1.2Mpixel camera, Bluetooth, WLAN, GPS, infra-red port, SD card and fingerprint scanner capability, the latter allowing pictures to be circulated quickly direct from the PDA.
The product is based on a 520MHz Intel XScale processor running Microsoft Windows Mobile 5 operating system with security and memory configuration enhancements ideal for users' information delivery needs.
Neil Fanthom, Operations Director with Display Solutions, said of the contract award: 'Display Solutions is delighted to have been selected by Motorola as their full-turnkey solutions provider for this unique product'.
'Our success in this venture has been as a result of our strong in-house technology and project management expertise, coupled with the capabilities of our world-class development and manufacturing partners'.
'The contract award is very significant for us in terms of contributing to both our short-term and long-term growth, but more importantly it fuels our business goal of becoming a leading design, manufacturing and service (DMS) solutions provider to major UK OEMs'.
