Danielson has launched an advanced magnetic switch system, called PushGate, which combines the thin design of a membrane switch with the tactile feel of a mechanical switch. The new switch system has been introduced as part of a licence agreement with US-based Duraswitch enabling Danielson to market, manufacture and support the company's technologies across Europe. The PushGate pushbutton switch offers the combined benefits of reliable and consistent tactile feel in a flat-panel membrane design, and can be easily integrated with other switch types into a slim, sealed panel.

In essence, the PushGate technology employs a magnetic sheet and an armature as the switching element onto silver or carbon contacts on a flexible substrate; gold-plated PCB contacts can also be incorporated.

The armature is held in the "normally off" position by the magnetic sheet and has a pivot point that can also be used to provide a second contact when used with a purpose designed footprint.

This is ideal for use in, for example, medical applications, where an initial contact is required at low force, followed by a further contact at a normal or higher force.

Unlike conventional short travel keys, PushGate does not degrade over time or use and is capable of a long operating life, providing in excess of 30 million actuations.

The new switch system can be shielded against EMI/RFI as well as static discharge.

The construction can be combined with various overlay options including polyester or elastomer as well as metal and plastic key caps.

Backlighting can be incorporated using EL, fibre-optic or LED technology.

PushGate can be used in extreme temperature and pressure applications and is particularly suitable for high impact applications such as bank cash points and train door opening systems, where keypads can be subject to vandalism or abuse.

The DuraSwitch PushGate range is available in a variety of specially customised options and constructions for various key sizes and spacing.
