Cypress Semiconductor is to contribute to Intel's latest concept PC, codenamed Hannacroix

The Hannacroix concept PC is a motherboard designed to demonstrate leading-edge I/O technology, and will use Cypress's ISD-300 ATA/ATAPI bridge to show high-speed USB 2.0 connectivity to mass storage devices and Cypress's TetraHub USB 2.0 hub controller to demonstrate the coexistence of multiple USB speeds.

"The Hannacroix concept PC is designed to show our customers how they can integrate leading-edge, value-added features into their motherboard designs", said Tom Matson, marketing director of Intel's Desktop Platform Solutions Division.

"A communications supplier such as Cypress, with its advanced USB 2.0 interface solutions, brings valuable capabilities to our demonstration systems and the Hannacroix concept PC marketing effort as a whole".

"Participation in the Hannacroix concept PC project will support our efforts to establish our USB 2.0 portfolio as state-of-the-art, value-added connectivity solutions", said Jeff Chang, USB product marketing manager for Cypress Semiconductor.

"Cypress has the broadest portfolio of USB solutions on the market with over 100 million units shipped, and we can help our customers take advantage of the synergy among them to design groundbreaking products".

The Cypress ISD-300 ATA/ATAPI bridge device is aimed specifically at enabling industry-standard mass storage devices - such as hard disk, CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-RAM and Zip drives - to be directly connected through a USB 2.0 interface.

Its fixed-logic architecture allows easy integration, as well as quick time-to-market.

The Cypress TetraHub is the industry's only USB 2.0 hub controller to integrate four transaction translators, allowing all three USB speeds - low-speed (1.5Mbit/s), full-speed (12Mbit/s) and hi-speed (480Mbit/s) - to operate at maximum bandwidth in USB-enabled systems.

This powerful hub controller provides the system intelligence needed to provide high levels of data control.

TetraHub is a fixed-function solution, requiring no firmware intervention, thereby reducing design risk and development time.

It may be used as a high-bandwidth controller in standalone hubs, monitor hubs, port replicators, and docking stations, or to increase the number of USB ports on a PC without integrating additional host controllers.

The Hannacroix concept PC illustrates Intel's ability to integrate future technologies seamlessly onto a single platform.

Hannacroix features next-generation technologies and is being developed by Intel's Desktop Platform Solutions Division.
