Speakers from around the world and spanning a variety of industry sectors are lining up to address a major conference on how organisations that need to maintain expensive long-lifespan equipment can deal with the growing problem of component obsolescence. The conference, entitled 'Obsolescence: risks, strategies and effective management processes', is being hosted by the Component Obsolescence Group (COG), the special interest forum set up to tackle the issue. The event will take place from 28th to 30th June 2005 at St David's Hotel in Cardiff, and will also include a trade exhibition.

Ted Glum, Director of Defense Microelectronics Activity (part of the US Department of Defense) and Howard Perkins, Director of Enabling Services, UK Ministry of Defence will give keynote speeches.

Among the other conference speakers will be representatives from Westinghouse Rail, Rochester Electronics, BAE Systems, Logistical and Mechanical Services of South Africa, and the Georgia Tech Research Institute in the USA.

Topics under discussion will include: obsolescence management strategies; potential future problems and ways of dealing with them; effectiveness of using 'off-the-shelf' commercial components to replace parts designed for the industrial market; lead-free - the impact of the new RoHS and WEEE Directives; and system and component obsolescence case studies.

Says Michael Trenchard, Chief Executive of COG: 'Component obsolescence is a growing issue for a huge number of organisations globally, so it is vital that we can bring them together in this way to share experience and discuss solutions to common problems'.

'We are very pleased to have such a range of speakers who can look at the issue from all sides to ensure a well-rounded debate'.

To register for the conference or for more information, visit the Components Obsolescence Group website.

The event costs GBP 450 for COG members and GBP 525 for nonmembers (plus VAT).
