Coverity software is being deployed by developers at Wind River to make the code in the company's embedded systems more reliable and secure. After using Coverity Prevent to detect defects in its Eclipse-based Workbench Development Suite for the past year, Wind River has conducted an enterprise roll-out to ensure higher code quality in their other products. Wind River provides device software optimisation solutions, including the popular Workbench development suite and VxWorks and Linux real-time operating systems.

Its platforms are deployed in more than 300 million devices, ranging from cellphones to the Mars Rover.

Wind River technology is widely used in the automotive, consumer, industrial, networking equipment and aerospace and defence industries, with customers who include BMW, Ericsson, Siemens, Nortel and Lockheed Martin.

'We compared and evaluated a number of programming and error detection tools and Coverity was superior', said Bob Ellis, Engineering Manager within Wind River.

'Since deploying Coverity Prevent, we've seen a significant reduction in time spent on code review, which can translate to a reduction in time to market for our customers'.

'Thanks to the time saved, our investment in Coverity's products will have paid for itself in as little as one year'.

'When developing device software, software quality is paramount'.

'By using Coverity products to analyse millions of lines of code prior to formal inspections and unit tests, we save time, money and engineering bandwidth, allowing us respond effectively to aggressive development schedules', added Ellis.

'The real beauty here is being able to drop a powerful tool like this, quickly into our development environment, with minimal or no change to our development process'.

'As a global leader in device software optimisation with a diverse product line, Wind River knows the importance of improving QA without disrupting development schedules', said Seth Hallem, CEO of Coverity.

'Systems built on Wind River products are deployed to the ends of the earth and beyond, so their code needs to be completely robust under the most extreme circumstances'.

'By achieving Coverity Clean status, Wind River is proving their commitment to identify software flaws and fix all relevant software defects', said David Park, VP of Business Development and Marketing for Coverity and head of the Coverity Clean programme.

'We have confidence in the quality and security of Wind River products and the development processes they use to build, analyse and test quality software'.

Companies are recognised as Coverity Clean after passing a thorough code review and committing to continued sound development procedures using source code analysis.

Wind River performed a complete review of their software products using advanced source code analysis.

Wind River then fixed critical defects found during the review and integrated the practice of continual analysis and defect correction into their product development cycle.
