Cambridge Positioning Systems (CPS) has signed a global licensing agreement to integrate its Cursor E-OTD location-based technology with Nortel Networks Mobile Location Centre.

The combined solution will allow delivery of E911 capabilities to operators and subscribers, in addition to providing a launching pad for value-added location-based applications and services.

The first US customer installations are planned for May 2002.

CPS' Cursor, based on E-OTD (enhanced observed time difference) technology, enables fast, cost-effective deployment and can achieve location accuracies to 100m, even in dense urban areas.

E-OTD technology has now been selected by all major US GSM wireless communications carriers as their technology of choice to support compliance with the FCC's emergency services legislation, known as E-911.

CPS Chief Executive Officer Chris Wade said: "We are delighted that Nortel Networks has selected CPS to work with them on the integration of the CPS E-OTD location technology.

This licence agreement puts into place what we believe will be a long term relationship to enable network operators to rapidly rollout safety location services to their customers".

Financial terms of the licensing agreement were not disclosed.

CPS is working with, or has licensed its E-OTD technology to, most of the network infrastructure and handset providers conducting business within the USA.
