Korean chipmaker licenses driver technology

The integration of PenTile technology will enable aSi providers to capitalise on the rising demand for high-resolution panels sparked by emerging data-centric applications and multimedia video in handheld mobile devices.
The first LCD driver IC from Tomato LSI to feature PenTile RGBW technology is a mere 21.9 x 1.45mm, making it ideal for applications requiring a smaller, thinner footprint.
It will support up to 256K colours, visual resolution up to 480 x 640, and standard data formats.
The driver has the same interface as standard RGB stripe smart driver ICs, but only requires two-thirds of the memory and two-thirds the number of source drivers.
It also will have integral gate driver support to reduce the chip sise and the number of transistor contacts.

Previously, aSi manufacturers were not able to efficiently produce high-resolution panels due to inadequate manufacturing processes.
But PenTile technology integration requires only minor modifications during production, uses fewer TFTs and columns, and reduces manufacturing complexity, thus opening the VGA market to older amorphous silicon display manufacturers.
PenTile technology also optimises display performance in terms of brightness and resolution - it can lower power consumption by at least half or more than double brightness; and it may enable smart drivers to be produced in a more cost-effective manner, giving LCD manufacturers an additional competitive advantage.

Tomato LSI will sell these IC driver components to major LCD manufacturers worldwide for use in mobile phone panels with up to 3.0in diagonals, and intends to develop more PenTile chips to ease implementation, lower cost, and increase display performance.
The first VGA chip samples are now available.
