Software receives US patent
The US Patent and Trademark Office has granted ChipData a patent covering software components central to the data retrieval and mining processes used in its Intelligent Content Creation product suite
The US Patent and Trademark Office has granted ChipData a patent covering software components central to the data retrieval and mining processes used in its Intelligent Content Creation (IC2) product suite, including SymXpert and PkgXpert. The new patent (US Patent 6,647,156) protects the advanced software architecture at the heart of ChipData's IC2 product suite, designed to help OEMs, design firms and component suppliers quickly and accurately create printed circuit board design content that can be transported across multiple design processes and EDA tools.

ChipData's patented technology is used to extract, identify and interpret technical information describing electronic components from unintelligent PDF-based component datasheets.
'This patent strengthens and solidifies ChipData's position in the market because it protects the key architecture and methodology that underpin our ground-breaking IC2 technology', said Bob Merlo, ChipData's President and CEO.
'ChipData's suite of design content acceleration applications makes it possible for businesses to maximise engineering productivity and leverage engineering resources across their organisation, which improves time to market and maximises revenues'.
Merlo believes receiving a patent for its data retrieval and mining technology is a significant achievement for ChipData and its customers because it validates that their solutions, processes and approach to design content acceleration are unique and valuable.
The patented technology is one component used in ChipData's IC2 SymXpert application which extracts pin information directly from suppliers' component datasheets, applies user-defined rules to customise symbol graphics and generates symbols in a variety of EDA formats.
The newly patented methodology is also used within IC2 PkgXpert which quickly captures package dimensions and tolerances, applies user-defined manufacturing rules to generate padstacks, and applies corporate rules to customise and generate package geometries in the users' choice of EDA formats.
