Cambridge Silicon Radio is to work with Cambridge Consultants (CCL) in the first of a limited series of agreements designed to provide Bluetooth solutions for niche markets. The complete solution agreement allows select companies such as CCL to access and tailor the on-chip Bluetooth core software stack in order to swiftly develop Bluetooth solutions for their vertical markets.

This, the first in a series of agreements with select partners, marks a watershed in integrating Bluetooth technology within the widest range of systems and devices by bringing software developer's expertise to bear directly on the core stack.

The agreements will give specific developers direct access to CSR's on-chip Bluetooth software, enabling the third party to act as a design house for custom on-chip software.

This first agreement combines CSR's leading technology with CCL's third party development knowledge and project management skills to deliver fast turnaround vertical market solutions.

This access ensures that the benefits of CSR's BlueCore technology are made available across a wide range of applications.

With access to these lower layers, developers can provide customers with the necessary customised function set whilst still benefiting the from BlueCore's cost, size, low power consumption and full Bluetooth functionality - advantages which have made BlueCore the world's number one Bluetooth solution.

Telecomms applications, for example, are typically enabled through this approach; by providing access to CSR's Link Manager protocol, one of the core software layers on the chip, CSR makes it possible for third party developers to customise the handover function for telecommunications systems - allowing a Bluetooth device a smooth uninterrupted transition between access points, or access points to a headset or between cellular networks and an office PBX.

Jim Schoenenberger, Associate Director, CCL commented, "CSR's BlueCore offers a trusted and reliable technology.

Building on our established relationship, this agreement allows us to quickly tailor Bluetooth solutions to exacting customer requirements, whilst building upon CCL's core strength of providing a holistic design and development service.

This agreement with the market leader in Bluetooth silicon enables flexible, custom-made Bluetooth solutions for both OEMs and consumers".

Simon Finch, Vice President of Strategic Marketing (Software), CSR replied, "We are in a position where we can now work with selected partners to develop Bluetooth solutions for all sectors of the market".

Finch continued, "There are many varied products that can benefit significantly from Bluetooth's wireless connectivity and these third party agreements enable us to drive a much wider implementation of the technology and to actively promote its application in a very wide range of mainstream technologies".
