Acquisition brings design
closer to manufacture
Cadence Design Systems has acquired K2 Technologies, an industry leader in mask data preparation
The acquisition, an important step in the company's design for manufacturing strategy, gives Cadence the most complete technical solution for mask data preparation, including the automation of wafer and reticle layout, jobdeck creation, fracturing and physical verification technologies. Cadence will retain K2's employees, who are located in Salt Lake City, Utah and Dallas, Texas.

"At 90 nanometres and below, you can no longer separate design from manufacturing", said Aki Fujimura, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of the Cadence design for manufacturing (DFM) business unit.
"Acquiring K2 is an important element of our strategy to integrate manufacturing data into the design process to ensure customer success".
"Another benefit is that our software designers will have even greater visibility into the manufacturing process", Fujimura added.
"This insight will help them improve our tools so that the transition from design to manufacturing is as seamless as possible for our customers".
K2's technology will be ported to the OpenAccess unified database, which Cadence developed and donated to the OpenAccess Coalition.
"Porting K2's technologies to OpenAccess is a perfect example of how Cadence combines in-house innovation with smart acquisitions of technology on the ascent", said Fujimura.
"By joining Cadence, our team will have access to resources that will enable us to greatly expand our technologies and reach more customers with our mask data prep tools", said Dave Rogers, CEO of K2 Technologies.
"Bringing manufacturing and design together is exactly what is required for next-generation chips, and we are excited about working with Cadence designers to help customers solve DFM problems".
K2 Technologies offers a highly automated approach to design finishing, which includes reticle design synthesis, wafer layout, fracturing, jobdeck generation, generation of mask/wafer fab documentation and physical verification technologies.
K2's tools help customers reduce cost, reduce cycle times and eliminate errors.
