Selective soldering offers advantages
Blundell Production Equipment offers several different styles of selective soldering machine
Selective soldering is gaining popularity because of the increase in surface mounted components, and the move towards lead free processing, according to machinery supplier Blundell Production Equipment. Automated selective soldering offers a number of advantages over traditional wave soldering, if there are only a few through hole components on the PCB.

Flux is only applied to the area to be soldered, so the whole PCB does not get covered in flux, as happens in a wave soldering process.
Less energy is expended, because the solder is applied by a very small nozzle, just slightly larger than an individual solder pad.
Connectors can be soldered in line, the nozzle moving along the row of joints without stopping.
The PCB does not get as hot as on a wave soldering process, and so there is less thermal stress on the assembly.
Selective soldering works well where the PCB contains a high count of surface mounted devices, mixed with through hole connectors and perhaps a few other through hole components spread across the board.
Blundell Production Equipment offers several different styles of selective soldering machine.
The entry level system is the Ebso SPA 250.
With a small footprint it will fit in the smallest of workshops, and the PCB is held in a gantry type frame which moves over a static fluxer and solder nozzle.
At the top end of the range is the Ersa Versaflow, which is an inline machine with a moving solder bath and fluxer.
Printed circuit boards are fed in by conveyor and the process is very similar to wave soldering except that the flux and solder modules move in x, y and z axes under the board, selecting the areas that need to be soldered.
The fluxer, preheater and solder bath work independently of each other for maximum throughput.
